Deutsche Aircraft Unveils First D328eco Test Plane
Deutsche Aircraft has unveiled its first D328eco test aircraft, TAC 1, at its headquarters on the Airtech Campus in Oberpfaffenhofen, marking a significant milestone in the company’s push for sustainable regional aviation. The rollout signals a transition from design to practical testing and industrialisation, underscoring Deutsche Aircraft’s commitment to innovation, decarbonisation, and improved connectivity.
The D328eco is an updated evolution of the Dornier 328, a regional aircraft with a strong operational track record spanning over three decades. Rather than a clean-sheet design, the D328eco builds on the proven platform of its predecessor, offering enhanced fuel efficiency, lower emissions, and improved passenger comfort. These upgrades aim to meet the growing demand for environmentally responsible solutions in regional air travel, while retaining the robustness and flexibility valued by airlines.
“The rollout of our first test aircraft marks a significant achievement in the D328eco programme and an important step towards our physical flight test activities,” said Nico Neumann, co-CEO of Deutsche Aircraft. “This milestone represents our transition from conceptual design to practical testing and industrialisation. At Deutsche Aircraft, we are proud to introduce an aircraft with the proven DNA of the Dornier 328, enhanced for better efficiency, reduced emissions and a superior customer experience, making it an optimal choice for regional operators worldwide.”
The unveiling follows the initial fuselage cut announced at the Farnborough International Airshow in July 2024. Since then, the D328eco programme has made steady progress, moving closer to its goal of delivering a more efficient and sustainable aircraft for regional markets.
While the D328eco has generated positive reactions in the market, particularly for its focus on sustainability, Deutsche Aircraft faces challenges ahead. Securing firm customer commitments and competing with established regional aircraft manufacturers remain key hurdles. Industry competitors are expected to respond by highlighting their own eco-friendly offerings, intensifying the focus on sustainability across the sector.
As the D328eco advances to the next phase of development and prepares for flight testing, Deutsche Aircraft continues to position the aircraft as a compelling solution for the future of regional air transport, aiming to balance innovation with the practical needs of operators and the growing imperative for environmental responsibility.
