CES 2022: Innovation Amid Uncertainty and Supply Chain Strains
CES 2022, one of the world’s largest technology trade shows, is proceeding with its in-person event in Las Vegas despite ongoing concerns related to the Omicron Covid-19 variant and persistent global supply chain disruptions. Returning to Las Vegas for the first time since 2020, this marks the first major in-person tech conference in the United States since the onset of the pandemic. However, this year’s event presents a markedly different experience compared to previous editions.
Attendees are required to wear masks, provide proof of vaccination, and have access to self-test kits. The event will also conclude a day earlier than originally planned. While over 2,200 exhibitors and more than 3,300 media representatives have registered for in-person attendance, several major companies—including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Intel, and Meta—have withdrawn from the physical event in recent weeks. Typically hosting around 4,000 exhibitors, CES will continue to offer a digital component following last year’s fully virtual format.
Gary Shapiro, president of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), which organizes CES, emphasized the necessity of moving forward with the event, particularly for smaller companies that depend on CES to showcase their innovations. In a recent blog post, Shapiro acknowledged that this year’s show will feature more small businesses, visible gaps on the show floor, and a different atmosphere. “It may be messy. But innovation is messy. It is risky and uncomfortable,” he wrote.
Industry Trends and Supply Chain Challenges
CES 2022 will highlight a range of industry trends and challenges, many shaped by the ongoing supply chain crisis. The automotive sector is expected to maintain a significant presence despite General Motors canceling its in-person participation. GM CEO Mary Barra will deliver the opening keynote, unveiling the company’s latest all-electric pickup truck and discussing the future of electric vehicles. Additionally, transportation innovations such as electric scooters, bikes, and Sierra Space’s partnership with NASA to deliver goods to the International Space Station will be featured.
Supply chain disruptions are not limited to technology exhibitors but are also compelling industries such as airlines to adopt creative approaches to sourcing spare parts. Facing delays and shortages, airlines are increasingly turning to alternative suppliers and unconventional sourcing strategies to maintain operations. These adaptations have elicited mixed reactions in the market, as rising costs and operational uncertainties reverberate across the sector. Competitors are responding by exploring similar strategies or seeking new supplier relationships, underscoring the widespread impact of global supply chain instability.
Focus on Digital Health, Policy, and Sustainability
Digital health will be a major focus at CES, with companies unveiling new health gadgets, applications, and services. Panel discussions will explore the future of telemedicine and innovations such as app-enabled, at-home Covid-19 tests. For the first time, medical device company Abbott will deliver a keynote presentation, highlighting the growing convergence of technology and healthcare.
Policy discussions will address critical issues including privacy laws and cybersecurity threats, while sustainability and climate change will also take center stage. Attendees can expect to encounter a broad array of green technologies, ranging from solar-powered devices to advancements in sustainable manufacturing. These exhibits reflect the technology industry’s increasing commitment to environmental responsibility.
Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic and supply chain disruptions, CES 2022 aims to serve as a platform for resilience and innovation, offering insight into how industries are adapting to a rapidly evolving global landscape.
