Onboarding@SKILL: A New Training Facility for Aircraft Engine MRO
The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) and ST Engineering have officially opened a pioneering training facility dedicated to aircraft engine maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Named ‘Onboarding Aviation Skills, Knowledge and Innovation Learning Laboratory‘ — or Onboarding@SKILL — the facility is the first in Singapore focused specifically on aircraft engine MRO, developed through a partnership between an educational institution and ST Engineering. The launch took place at ITE College Central, officiated by Alvin Tan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Culture, Community and Youth.
Training and Technology at Onboarding@SKILL
Designed to train more than 380 students and trainees each year, Onboarding@SKILL is intended to closely replicate real-world MRO environments. The facility features core engine maintenance procedures and cutting-edge technologies employed by ST Engineering, including Augmented Reality (AR), robotics, additive manufacturing, and digital solutions such as electronic task cards. These tools mirror actual industry practices, offering learners exposure to current operational standards and precision methods.
Future Prospects and Courses
From 2026, the training centre will support students enrolled in ITE's new three-year Higher Nitec in Aerospace Engineering course. With hands-on experience in a simulated professional setting and potential internships at ST Engineering, learners will graduate with industry-relevant skills and a strong foundation for careers in aviation MRO. The facility will also benefit current trainees in the ITE Work-Study Diplomas in Aircraft Engine Maintenance and Aircraft Maintenance Engineering, enhancing their in-campus training and technical proficiency.
Strengthening Partnerships
To further cement the partnership, ITE and ST Engineering signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at the launch, outlining continued collaboration in curriculum development, facility upgrades, and internship opportunities — all aimed at nurturing the next generation of aviation professionals.
