Malta's Elit'Avia International Acquires First Global 6500 Jet
Fleet Expansion Amid Market Developments
Elit'Avia International, headquartered at Malta International Airport, has expanded its fleet with the addition of its first Bombardier Global 6500 jet. The aircraft, registered as 9H-ARK (msn 60011) and approximately 5.6 years old, entered service under Elit'Avia’s ‘EAU’ code on June 4. It arrived following a repositioning flight from Berlin Brandenburg Airport, where it had been stored since 2022, to Vienna.
This acquisition enhances Elit'Avia International’s portfolio of long-range business jets, which already includes two Global 5000s, a Global 6000, and a Global 7500. The company’s diverse fleet also features a Falcon 7X, added in March 2025, alongside a G450, GVII-G500, G550, three G650s, and a Boeing 747-400(BDSF) operated on behalf of Dubai-based cargo firm Mesk Air. Elit'Avia’s sister company, Elit'Avia International SM, manages a Global Express XRS and a Global 7500, while Elit'Avia Americas currently does not operate any Global-series jets.
Background and Regulatory Context
The newly acquired Global 6500 was formerly operated by Emperor Aviation, a company sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) in 2022 due to its links with Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov and his daughter, Gulnara Kerimova. The aircraft 9H-ARK was among eight jets embargoed by OFAC between 2022 and 2024 before Emperor Aviation was removed from the sanctions list. Another previously sanctioned G650, registered as 9H-SSK (msn 6195), is now owned by Elit'Avia International but remains inactive in Hannover. Additionally, a G650 now registered as 9H-JKA (msn 6356) is operated by Gestair Aviation Malta. The remaining five embargoed aircraft—a Challenger 650, a Global Express XRS, two Global 5000s, and a Citation XLS+—have been stored at various locations including Belgrade, Cologne/Bonn, Dubai, and Vienna since 2022.
Market Implications and Competitive Landscape
Elit'Avia International’s acquisition of the Global 6500 occurs amid signs of stabilization in the business aviation market, with renewed interest in large-cabin, long-range jets. Despite the growing demand, operating such sophisticated aircraft entails considerable challenges, including elevated operational costs and complex maintenance demands. This strategic move also heightens competition within the regional business aviation sector. Competitors such as Global Jet have recently reported fleet expansions and are anticipated to respond by broadening their own offerings or enhancing service quality to sustain market share.
As the business aviation market continues to evolve, Elit'Avia International’s investment in the Global 6500 positions the company to leverage increasing demand while managing the operational and competitive pressures characteristic of the industry.
