Vietjet Orders 20 Airbus A330neo Wide-Body Aircraft

Vietjet has announced a major expansion of its fleet with the purchase of 20 Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft, a move that marks a significant milestone in the airline’s international growth strategy. The agreement was signed during a ceremony in Hanoi attended by Vietnamese State President Luong Cuong and French President Emmanuel Macron, highlighting the strategic importance of the deal amid Macron’s state visit to Vietnam. This acquisition is expected to bolster Vietjet’s presence in the Asia-Pacific region and support the development of new long-haul routes to Europe.

Strategic Fleet Modernization and Growth

Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman and CEO of Vietjet, emphasized the critical role of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft in the airline’s expansion plans. She reaffirmed Vietjet’s dedication to building a contemporary fleet that not only enhances operational efficiency but also strengthens economic and technological ties between Vietnam and France. The introduction of the A330neo will allow Vietjet to increase capacity on high-demand routes and better accommodate evolving passenger preferences.

This latest order doubles Vietjet’s confirmed A330neo purchases to 40 aircraft. In addition to this, the airline holds an existing order for 96 single-aisle A320neo family jets and currently operates an all-Airbus fleet comprising 115 aircraft, including 108 from the A320 family and seven A330-300s. Wouter van Wersch, President of Airbus International, acknowledged Vietjet’s rapid rise as one of the fastest-growing airlines globally.

However, this ambitious expansion occurs within a highly competitive market environment. Industry analysts suggest that Vietjet’s move may prompt rival carriers to accelerate their own fleet modernization efforts, intensifying competition on key international routes. The scale of the order could also invite regulatory scrutiny as authorities evaluate its impact on market dynamics and operational standards.

Advanced Aircraft Features and Sustainability Commitment

The Airbus A330-900, equipped with Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, offers a maximum range of 13,300 kilometers. Passengers will benefit from Airbus’s award-winning Airspace cabin, which provides enhanced comfort through larger personal spaces, expanded overhead storage, advanced lighting, and state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment and connectivity systems. These features are designed to significantly improve the passenger experience, particularly on long-haul flights.

Sustainability remains a central focus for both Vietjet and Airbus. The A330neo is capable of operating on fuel blends containing up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with plans to achieve 100% SAF capability by 2030. The A330 family has garnered over 1,800 orders from more than 130 customers worldwide as of April 2025, reflecting strong industry confidence in its environmental performance.

Expanding International Reach

Vietjet’s current A330 fleet serves international destinations including Australia, India, and Kazakhstan, offering premium services such as business class. The expanded fleet will enable the airline to launch new routes and better meet the demands of a growing global customer base. As Vietjet advances its long-haul ambitions, it faces the challenge of balancing cost efficiency and fuel performance amid increasing competition and regulatory oversight.
