Fort Worth’s F-35 and Supply Chain Highlight Texas’ Role in U.S. Defense

Fort Worth’s F-35 Assembly and Supply Chain Underscore Texas’ Strategic Role in U.S. Defense
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recently visited Fort Worth to honor the workforce at Lockheed Martin’s Air Force Plant 4, where the F-35 fighter jets are assembled. This visit highlighted Fort Worth’s longstanding contribution to national defense, tracing a legacy from the production of B-24 Liberators during World War II to the manufacturing of today’s most advanced military aircraft. The city’s aerospace industry continues to serve as a critical engine for both economic growth and the security of the United States.
The F-35 Program and Its Economic Impact
The F-35 program represents the latest evolution in Fort Worth’s defense manufacturing heritage. Secretary Hegseth emphasized the aircraft’s role in reestablishing deterrence, noting that this mission has been central to the program since its inception and remains vital today. The success of the F-35 is not confined to a single facility; rather, it depends on a complex and extensive supply chain comprising over 1,900 American companies. Within Texas alone, more than 100 firms contribute to the program, supporting tens of thousands of skilled jobs and generating nearly $10 billion in economic activity.
Hegseth underscored the importance of domestic manufacturing to national strength, stating, “If you want American strength, you better have American manufacturing — and it better be world class.” He highlighted the competitive spirit of American industry as a key factor in maintaining the country’s leadership in defense technology.
Industry Innovation and Expansion in Fort Worth
Fort Worth-based Goff Aerospace exemplifies the innovative and resilient nature of the local defense sector. With operations across the United States, Goff Aerospace produces precision components essential to the F-35’s performance, including bulkheads, wing structures, and critical fluid and air-handling systems. The company is actively responding to the accelerated production schedule of the F-35, which now proceeds at a rate five times faster than any other allied fighter jet.
To address increasing demand and mitigate challenges such as supply chain disruptions and lengthy turnaround times, Goff Aerospace is expanding its manufacturing capabilities. The company is developing a new 127,000-square-foot facility in Decatur, designed to enhance defense production capacity as contracts and funding grow. Additionally, Goff Aerospace has integrated in-house metal finishing and non-destructive testing processes, employing automation and advanced manufacturing techniques to reduce production timelines by weeks and improve supply chain resilience.
Challenges and Market Dynamics
Despite these advancements, the defense manufacturing industry continues to face significant challenges. Supply chain interruptions, rising production costs, and intensifying competition from international defense manufacturers pose ongoing risks. As global defense budgets increase, rival nations are accelerating the development and production of their own advanced fighter jets to secure market share.
Nevertheless, the F-35 program’s strong delivery record and strategic partnerships have generated positive market responses, including rising stock prices for major defense contractors such as Lockheed Martin. The investments and innovations underway in Fort Worth reflect confidence in the sustained global demand for the F-35, the strength of the local workforce, and the enduring value of advanced manufacturing in Texas.
Fort Worth’s role in supporting U.S. and allied airpower remains pivotal, with its industrial base continuing to serve as a foundation for both economic vitality and national security.
