Establishing a Career Pathway from High School to the MRO Industry
Bridging Education and Industry in Southern Illinois
Carol Valentino-Barry, executive director of Mentoring Mission and Project AMPLiFI, is spearheading efforts to connect high school students with careers in the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sector. Her initiatives, launched in Southern Illinois, aim to provide direct access to aviation maintenance training and mentorship, addressing both local workforce demands and broader challenges faced by the industry. Although Southern Illinois is not traditionally known as an aviation or MRO hub, the region is witnessing increased demand for skilled labor. Key local airports, including Southern Illinois Airport and Veterans Airport of Southern Illinois, alongside businesses such as Crucial MRO, Arch Medical Aviation, and Midwest Aviation, are driving this growth. However, the area’s geographic isolation, limited transportation infrastructure, constrained school resources, and a scarcity of visible role models present significant barriers for students considering careers in aviation maintenance.
Valentino-Barry identifies exposure as the primary obstacle. Many students do not perceive aviation maintenance as a viable career path. To counter this, Project AMPLiFI offers FAA-aligned aviation maintenance training directly to high school students through after-school classes held at the airport. These sessions utilize real tools and are led by industry professionals, providing students with practical experience. The initiative does not seek to transform Southern Illinois into a national aviation center but rather to establish concrete pathways for underserved youth to enter an industry facing a critical talent shortage.
Mentorship and Skills Development
Mentoring Mission, founded by Valentino-Barry, complements this approach by connecting students with mentors and equipping them with real-world skills. The organization focuses on young people who might otherwise be overlooked, having mentored over 500 students nationally and internationally in the past year alone. Its dual-track model offers vocational training alongside leadership and problem-solving development, the latter using Harvard Business School case studies facilitated by volunteer MBAs.
Project AMPLiFI, launched in 2023 with federal workforce funding, specifically targets the aviation maintenance pipeline. Students receive hands-on instruction from certified aviation maintenance technicians, learning technical skills such as torqueing and safety wiring, and participate in tours of active MRO facilities. This technical training is paired with leadership and critical thinking exercises designed to build both expertise and professional confidence.
Responding to Industry-Wide Workforce Needs
These initiatives reflect a wider industry trend emphasizing the importance of specialized training programs amid rising demand for skilled MRO professionals. Similar efforts, such as the aviation maintenance technician program in Minnesota and expanded educational partnerships by companies like AAR, highlight the growing collaboration between industry and education. Despite these advances, competition for talent remains intense, not only within aviation but also from other sectors like agriculture, which similarly require skilled technical workers.
By integrating hands-on technical education with mentorship and leadership development, programs like Project AMPLiFI and Mentoring Mission are cultivating a sustainable workforce pipeline. Valentino-Barry underscores the broader impact of these efforts: “We’re not just offering career options. We’re giving students the networks, skills, and confidence to belong in industries they never thought possible.”
