Suspension of Abu Dhabi Route Amid Engine Supply Challenges

British Airways (BA) has announced the suspension of its daily flights between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport for the entire summer 2025 season. This decision stems from ongoing supply chain difficulties related to the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines that power its Boeing 787 fleet. The 3,426-mile route, which had only recently resumed in April 2024 after a four-year pandemic-induced hiatus, will be paused from March 30 to October 25, 2025.

A spokesperson for British Airways expressed regret over the disruption, explaining that delays in the delivery of engines and parts from Rolls-Royce, particularly concerning the Trent 1000 engines, have compelled the airline to adjust its schedule. “We do not believe the issue will be resolved quickly, and we want to offer our customers the certainty they deserve for their travel plans,” the spokesperson said. The airline has apologized to affected passengers and is providing most travelers with alternative flights on the same day, either through British Airways or its partner airlines.

The suspension creates a notable gap in the market, potentially inviting competitors to capitalize on the opportunity. Passengers face the inconvenience of rerouting, while the ongoing engine problems continue to raise questions about British Airways’ operational reliability as the airline adapts its network in response to prolonged supply chain disruptions.

Wider Network Adjustments Reflecting Engine Troubles

The suspension of the Abu Dhabi service is part of a broader series of network changes driven by the Trent 1000 engine issues. British Airways has already withdrawn its daily London Heathrow to Dallas-Fort Worth service for summer 2025 and canceled flights to Kuwait International Airport. The airline will also reduce its London Heathrow to Miami service by eliminating the second daily flight, scale back capacity to Doha, and maintain only two daily flights to New Delhi instead of the previously planned three. Additionally, the launch of a new Kuala Lumpur route has been postponed, and flights between London Gatwick and New York JFK will be cut from December 12 through March 25.

In contrast, British Airways has decided to retain its longstanding London Heathrow to Bahrain route for next summer and beyond, following consultations with partners and stakeholders.
