Qatar Airways Cancels Boeing 737 MAX 10 Order Amid Fleet Strategy Shift
Qatar Airways has officially canceled its order for 25 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft, a move confirmed by Chief Executive Officer Badr Al-Meer in an interview with Bloomberg. The decision marks a significant shift in the airline’s fleet strategy, as it pivots away from the troubled Boeing narrowbody model and refocuses on Airbus’s A321neo.
The original order for the Boeing 737 MAX 10s was placed in 2022 at the Farnborough Airshow, during a period when Qatar Airways was embroiled in a high-profile legal dispute with Airbus over paint quality issues on its A350 fleet. At the time, the Boeing order was seen as a stopgap measure to fill the void left by the cancellation of a 50-plane Airbus A321neo order, which had been scrapped amid the dispute.
However, evolving operational needs and ongoing certification delays for the 737 MAX 10 prompted Qatar Airways to reconsider its position. Industry sources had previously indicated that the airline was evaluating a switch to the smaller 737 MAX 8 model, which is already in use by partners such as RwandAir and Virgin Australia. Ultimately, the carrier opted to abandon the MAX 10 order altogether, reflecting a broader realignment of its narrowbody fleet requirements.
The cancellation comes as Qatar Airways recently announced its largest-ever aircraft order—a $96 billion deal for 160 Boeing widebody jets, including 130 787s and 30 777-9s, with options for 50 more. This order, focused exclusively on widebody aircraft, underscores the airline’s commitment to expanding its long-haul capabilities while reassessing its narrowbody strategy.
Relations between Qatar Airways and Airbus have since improved. In early 2023, the two companies reached an amicable resolution to their dispute, leading to the reinstatement of both the A321neo and A350 orders. CEO Badr Al-Meer has noted that Airbus is now delivering aircraft ahead of schedule, further strengthening the partnership.
The decision to cancel the 737 MAX 10 order highlights the impact of certification delays on Boeing’s narrowbody program and signals Qatar Airways’ renewed confidence in Airbus’s offerings. While competitor responses have been muted, the market is closely watching how this shift will influence future fleet decisions across the industry.
Qatar Airways’ move reflects its ongoing efforts to optimize its fleet for operational efficiency and reliability, aligning with evolving market demands and regulatory developments. As the airline continues to expand its global network, its fleet choices will remain a key factor in maintaining its competitive edge.
