Archer’s Midnight Flight Test Program Reaches Record Heights
SALINAS, Calif., September 22, 2025 – Archer Aviation Inc. (NYSE: ACHR) has announced a significant milestone in its Midnight aircraft test program, with its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle reaching a record altitude of 7,000 feet during a recent flight from the company’s Salinas, California test facility. This achievement represents a key advancement in Archer’s ongoing envelope expansion testing, aimed at evaluating and demonstrating the operational range and performance of the Midnight aircraft.
Expanding Operational Capabilities
Although eVTOL aircraft like Midnight are primarily designed to operate within urban environments at altitudes ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 feet, the ability to reach higher elevations provides greater flexibility for air traffic management and facilitates operations in cities located at higher altitudes. During the record-setting flight, a test pilot executed a steady climb to 7,000 feet, maintained level flight, and completed a 45-mile journey at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour. This flight follows a previous milestone achieved last month, when Midnight covered approximately 55 miles in 31 minutes at speeds over 126 miles per hour.
Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of Archer, expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments, emphasizing the company’s commitment to safety and performance. He stated, “I’m proud of the team for consistently proving Midnight’s performance capabilities while maintaining the highest safety standards. Our test pilots will continue to safely and methodically test Midnight’s speed, duration, and mission profiles to prepare for early commercial operations.”
Navigating Regulatory and Market Challenges
These advancements come as Archer pursues Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification in the United States and prepares for near-term commercialization in the United Arab Emirates. However, the company’s progress unfolds amid significant industry-wide challenges. Regulatory hurdles remain substantial, particularly for higher altitude operations that require additional approvals and rigorous safety evaluations. Ensuring reliability and passenger safety through extensive testing remains paramount. Meanwhile, the competitive landscape intensifies as rival eVTOL manufacturers accelerate their own development and testing programs.
Market reactions to Archer’s recent achievements have been mixed. While the technical milestones underscore the aircraft’s growing capabilities, some analysts remain cautious, highlighting the regulatory and operational challenges that lie ahead. Archer’s ability to convert these test results into commercial success will depend on its capacity to navigate these obstacles and sustain momentum in an increasingly competitive environment.
Archer continues to focus on advancing the technologies and aircraft that could shape the future of urban air mobility. As the Midnight program progresses, the company confronts both the promise of expanded operational capabilities and the realities of a rapidly evolving and highly regulated industry.
