Companies Announce $33 Million Aviation Facility Project at Pryor Field
Major Investment in Alabama’s Aviation Infrastructure
Limestone County, Alabama, has witnessed the commencement of a $32.7 million aviation facility project at Pryor Field Regional Airport, spearheaded by Aleut Real Estate LLC (ARE). The new state-of-the-art hangar is designed to support Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) operations for both commercial and military aircraft, with an anticipated completion date in early 2027. This development represents a significant enhancement to Alabama’s aviation infrastructure and is expected to generate 50 new jobs within three years.
The project is a collaborative effort between Aleut Real Estate and Strata-G Solutions, a Huntsville-based defense engineering and manufacturing firm owned by Aleut. The facility will be equipped to accommodate aircraft with wingspans exceeding 130 feet, catering to prominent clients such as Boeing and various branches of the U.S. military, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and Customs and Border Protection.
Strategic Partnerships and Regional Support
Skoey Vergen, President and CEO of Aleut, emphasized the company’s commitment to growth through strong partnerships. He noted that the increasing demand for aviation and defense infrastructure in Alabama underscores the importance of this project in supporting both regional economic development and national defense readiness. The initiative has been made possible through close cooperation with Limestone County and the State of Alabama.
The project forms part of the Pryor Field Airport Authority’s southwest expansion plan and benefits from regional economic incentives. Infrastructure enhancements, including a new roadway and improvements to Airport Road, are supported by $776,400 in state funding. Construction is set to progress rapidly over the next 18 months, with sitework already underway.
Governor Kay Ivey praised the investment, highlighting its dual impact on job creation and strengthening Alabama’s role in national security and aircraft readiness. She welcomed Aleut as a key partner in the state’s ongoing growth and leadership in critical sectors.
Ellen McNair, Secretary of the Alabama Department of Commerce, described the project as a model for the type of forward-looking, high-impact developments Alabama seeks to attract. She underscored the facility’s potential to enhance aviation infrastructure, support defense priorities, and provide meaningful employment opportunities for the state’s skilled workforce.
Challenges and Regional Impact
Despite the positive outlook, the project faces potential challenges, including securing adequate funding, ensuring regulatory compliance, and adhering to construction timelines. Market responses have been favorable, with growing investor interest in the aviation sector’s expansion. Competitors may respond by investing in similar facilities or forming strategic partnerships to strengthen their own capabilities.
Collin Daly, Chairman of the Limestone County Commission, expressed confidence in the region’s ability to support such industrial developments. He highlighted the investment as a testament to Limestone County’s attractiveness for world-class operations and its potential to create high-quality jobs for local residents.
The new hangar is poised to significantly expand regional capacity for mission-critical aircraft maintenance, reinforcing Alabama’s position as a leader in aviation and defense industries.
