Hybrid Electric Systems and Industry Challenges Alongside the RISE program’s core developments, CFM’s parent companies, Safran and GE Aerospace, are actively advancing hybrid electric propulsion technologies. GE Aerospace recently completed two hybrid electric engine ground tests, demonstrating the viability of electric propulsion with and without energy storage. Meanwhile, Safran has launched PHILEAS, a full-scale engine demonstrator equipped with two electric machines, at its Istres facility in France. This project targets the next generation of short- and medium-range aircraft. Despite these technological strides, CFM faces considerable challenges in bringing open-fan technology to market. The integration of turboprop and turbofan features presents complex engineering hurdles, requiring extensive testing to ensure reliability and maintainability. High development costs remain a significant concern, and the market response has included skepticism from traditional engine manufacturers regarding the performance and cost-effectiveness of open-fan designs. Competitors are accelerating their own open-fan and hybrid engine initiatives, forming strategic partnerships and seeking expertise to remain competitive. Boeing’s cautious stance on adopting new propulsion systems reflects a broader industry hesitancy toward rapid change. In a related announcement, CFM confirmed it has secured certification from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for its LEAP-1B high-pressure turbine durability kit. This certification underscores ongoing efforts to enhance current engine offerings while simultaneously pursuing next-generation technologies.
