Air India AI-171 Crash Investigation Nears Completion, Report Expected Soon: Civil Aviation Minister
Investigation Progress and Transparency
The investigation into the Air India AI-171 crash near Ahmedabad is approaching its conclusion, with the final report expected to be released shortly, announced Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu on Wednesday. Speaking to the press, Kinjarapu underscored the importance of conducting the probe with transparency, fairness, and accountability, given the international nature of the flight and the global attention the incident has attracted. He affirmed that the process remains open to scrutiny and expressed confidence that the comprehensive findings would be available soon.
The tragic accident occurred on June 12 of the previous year, when Air India flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed shortly after departing from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The disaster resulted in the loss of 260 lives, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground.
Operational Challenges and Safety Concerns
The crash has intensified scrutiny of Air India’s operational standards amid ongoing challenges to the airline’s reputation. The carrier has faced a series of operational lapses and safety violations, which have compounded concerns about its ability to maintain rigorous safety protocols. Financial pressures have also mounted due to the depreciation of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, which has increased fuel costs and strained the airline’s resources.
In addition to the AI-171 investigation, Air India is under review following a recent incident involving a London-bound flight that experienced a fuel-control switch defect. Indian aviation safety authorities are closely monitoring the situation and intend to observe Boeing’s testing of the component at the manufacturer’s Seattle facility to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The airline’s operations have further been impacted by geopolitical developments, notably the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has necessitated the rerouting of several international flights. Despite these disruptions, Air India continues to operate services to New York and Newark, incorporating technical stops at Rome’s Fiumicino Airport to accommodate the altered flight paths.
Minister’s Visit to Ranchi and Broader Context
During his visit to Ranchi, Minister Kinjarapu announced the inauguration of a Udaan Yatri Cafe at Ranchi airport, responding to public demand for affordable food and beverage options. He noted that similar cafes have been successfully launched at multiple airports across India, receiving positive feedback from travelers.
Kinjarapu also described Ranchi as a “very beautiful city” and emphasized the need for collective national efforts to address challenges arising from the ongoing crisis in West Asia. He highlighted the government’s commitment to managing the situation collaboratively to mitigate its impact on the country.
The forthcoming final report on the AI-171 crash is expected to offer critical insights into the causes of the accident and provide recommendations aimed at strengthening aviation safety standards in India.
