Air India CEO Predicts Visible Changes in 2026

Air India CEO Foresees Transformative Changes by 2026
Air India is poised for a significant transformation in passenger experience by 2026, according to CEO Campbell Wilson. Speaking at the Air India Training Academy in Gurugram, Wilson outlined the airline’s ambitious plans to modernize its fleet and enhance onboard services, marking a pivotal moment in the carrier’s evolution.
Fleet Modernization and Upgrades
Central to Air India’s strategy is the comprehensive upgrade of its wide-body aircraft. By 2026, the airline will introduce six new wide-body jets, comprising Boeing 787-9 and Airbus A350-1000 models, alongside several retrofitted Boeing 787-8s. The first of the new 787-9 aircraft is expected to arrive by late 2025. Currently, two legacy 787-8s are undergoing extensive interior refurbishments in Victorville, California, which include the installation of new in-flight entertainment systems and Wi-Fi connectivity. These aircraft are scheduled to return to service by February 2026, with two to three additional wide-bodies receiving similar upgrades each month thereafter. By the end of 2026, approximately two-thirds of the 787 fleet will feature these enhancements, with the full retrofit anticipated by mid-2027. These aircraft primarily operate on routes to Europe, Australasia, and Southeast Asia.
In addition to wide-body improvements, Air India has completed upgrades on 27 legacy wide-body aircraft. On the narrow-body side, 81 percent of the fleet has been modernized, with the remaining 17 aircraft—originally slated for retirement—now set for refurbishment in 2026 due to delivery delays from Airbus and Boeing. The airline’s firm order includes 570 aircraft, of which 524 are yet to be delivered, with a substantial influx expected in 2027 and 2028. To support this rapid expansion, Air India is investing heavily in systems, training, and human resources. Meanwhile, Air India Express is advancing the refit of 50 “white-tail” aircraft, originally built for another airline but undelivered due to the pandemic.
Enhancements in Service and Customer Experience
Beyond fleet upgrades, Air India is revamping its service offerings. A new food and beverage menu is being introduced across the network, with domestic routes scheduled for an upgrade by January. The airline is also refreshing its lounge network, highlighted by the opening of a new Maharaja Lounge at Delhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 in December. Additional lounges are planned for Delhi’s domestic terminal, San Francisco, and an upgraded facility at New York JFK in 2026.
These initiatives have already begun to resonate with customers. Air India’s Net Promoter Score reached a record high of 37 in September 2025, based on feedback from nearly 200,000 passengers, reflecting growing satisfaction with the airline’s evolving offerings.
Navigating a Complex Industry Landscape
Despite these positive developments, Air India faces a challenging industry environment in 2026. While demand for premium travel remains strong and fuel prices are relatively low, sustaining growth will require navigating shifting market dynamics. Competitors are making strategic moves, such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd’s partnership with Russia to manufacture SJ-100 jets, which could intensify competition for Boeing and Airbus. Additionally, broader trends including the adoption of AI-powered processes and evolving workforce strategies are expected to influence Air India’s operations and the wider aviation sector. Market reactions and investor sentiment will continue to be closely monitored as the industry adapts to these changes.
