Airplane-engine maintenance is now a money spinner

Airplane-Engine Maintenance Emerges as a Lucrative Sector
At this week’s Farnborough International Airshow, a prominent biennial event in the aerospace industry, one of the standout announcements was a significant deal involving IndiGo, a rapidly expanding Indian airline. The carrier committed to purchasing over 1,000 Leap jet engines from CFM International, a joint venture between the American company GE Aerospace and France’s Safran. These engines are intended to power a fleet of aircraft currently on order from Airbus.
Strategic Expansion into Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul
Beyond the engine supply contract, CFM International secured an additional strategic advantage by agreeing to assist IndiGo in establishing a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility dedicated to servicing these engines. While often overlooked, MRO operations represent one of the most profitable segments within the aviation industry. According to consultancy firm Arthur D. Little, the sector is experiencing an MRO “supercycle,” driven by expanding global demand.
Growing Fleet and Rising Demand for Maintenance
The global fleet of passenger jets is projected to increase by more than 3% annually, reaching over 50,000 aircraft by 2045, according to Boeing’s forecasts. This growth is accompanied by intensified aircraft utilization, as airlines operate planes on demanding schedules and extend their service lives. The substantial order backlogs at Airbus and Boeing—totaling approximately 16,000 aircraft—further underscore the sustained demand for maintenance services and spare parts. Consequently, the MRO market is poised for significant expansion, reflecting its critical role in supporting the aviation sector’s growth.
