American Airlines Weighs Widebody Choice as Airbus Challenges Boeing
American Airlines is on the verge of a significant widebody aircraft order that could encompass up to 65 jets, aimed at replacing its aging fleet of 47 Boeing 777-200ERs and supporting its ambitions for international expansion. While Boeing currently holds structural advantages in the competition, American’s leadership emphasizes that the decision remains open, with Airbus mounting a formidable challenge.
Boeing’s Established Advantages and Considerations
Boeing’s 787-9 and 787-10 models are widely regarded as frontrunners in the selection process, primarily due to American’s existing investment in the 787 family. The airline operates the 787-8 and 787-9 and has 19 additional 787-9s on order, along with options for 28 more aircraft. This established fleet offers considerable benefits, including streamlined pilot training, unified maintenance operations, and consolidated spare parts inventories. Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper acknowledges that Boeing’s fleet commonality “gets points” for reducing long-term costs and operational complexity.
However, the larger 787-10 is not an automatic choice. CEO Robert Isom has previously indicated that the 787-10’s size may not align well with American’s network requirements, complicating the assumption that expanding the current 787 fleet is the simplest path forward.
Airbus Emerges as a Serious Contender
Despite having retired its Airbus A330 fleet during the pandemic, American is seriously considering the Airbus A330neo. Choosing the A330neo would necessitate rebuilding training and maintenance infrastructure, introducing split-fleet complexity and additional costs. Nevertheless, Pieper argues that Airbus could offset these challenges through aggressive pricing and potentially earlier delivery slots, a critical advantage amid widespread production backlogs affecting airlines globally.
Airbus also benefits from historical ties with American. The airline inherited a firm order for 22 A350s through its merger with US Airways but canceled it in 2018 in favor of additional Boeing 787s to simplify its fleet. A renewed Airbus order would represent a strategic reversal, yet the A330neo’s moderate size and cost profile make it a compelling option aligned with American’s operational needs.
Market Dynamics and Competitive Pressures
American’s forthcoming decision occurs against a backdrop of intense competition with rivals Delta and United, both of which are investing heavily in fleet modernization and enhanced passenger amenities. American plans to introduce seatback screens and upgrade its first-class cabins to match or exceed competitors’ offerings.
The broader commercial aviation market remains fiercely competitive. Recent data indicates that Airbus and Boeing collectively delivered 100 commercial narrowbody aircraft in July 2026, highlighting robust demand and rivalry. Industry analysts suggest that securing American’s widebody order could provide a significant advantage to the winning manufacturer, while competitors may respond by negotiating improved terms or accelerating their own fleet renewal programs.
Less Likely Options: A350 and 777X
While the Airbus A350 and Boeing 777X remain technically under consideration, both are viewed as unlikely choices. Their larger size and higher costs do not align with American’s stated preference for moderate-capacity, long-haul aircraft, positioning the 787 and A330neo as the most realistic contenders as the airline approaches its final decision.
