Archer Acquires Lilium’s Patent Portfolio

Archer Aviation Acquires Lilium’s Patent Portfolio
Archer Aviation has secured the patent portfolio of German eVTOL pioneer Lilium in a transaction valued at €18 million (approximately $21 million). This acquisition transfers over 300 patents related to high-voltage systems, battery management, aircraft design, flight control, electric propulsion, and propeller technologies to the California-based company, marking a significant development in the competitive urban air mobility sector.
Background and Competitive Bidding
Lilium, founded in 2015 by engineers from the Technical University of Munich, was once regarded as a trailblazer in air taxi innovation, having attracted €1.5 billion in investment. However, the company faced prolonged certification delays and financial difficulties, culminating in insolvency in October 2023. A subsequent rescue attempt by a new investor failed, leading to a second bankruptcy declaration in February 2024.
The sale of Lilium’s intellectual property followed a competitive bidding process involving Archer, US rival Joby Aviation, and the Netherlands-based Ambitious Air Mobility Group (AAMG). AAMG, which had publicly expressed intentions to revive Lilium, claimed to have submitted a fully compliant and financially secured bid of up to €30 million for all of Lilium’s assets. The group criticized the decision to accept Archer’s lower offer, which covered limited intellectual property rights, describing the outcome as “deeply disappointed” and alleging that the process did not honor the commitment to award assets to the highest bidder.
Ivo-Meinert Willrodt, Lilium’s insolvency administrator from the law firm Pluta, stated, “After lengthy negotiations in a complex transaction process, Archer prevailed in the bidding competition.” Archer’s founder and CEO, Adam Goldstein, acknowledged Lilium’s contributions to eVTOL technology, saying, “Lilium’s pioneering work advanced the frontier of eVTOL design and technology, and we’re excited to bring their cutting-edge technologies into the fold at Archer as we advance our product roadmap.”
Strategic Implications and Market Response
The acquisition strengthens Archer’s technological foundation as it prepares for its inaugural commercial flights, scheduled to launch in Abu Dhabi. Investor confidence has responded positively, with Archer’s stock surging nearly 300% over the past year, reflecting optimism about the company’s ability to leverage its expanded patent portfolio.
Nonetheless, integrating Lilium’s patents and maintaining their technological edge may present challenges for Archer. The acquisition is also expected to prompt competitors to accelerate their own patent acquisitions or enhance existing technologies to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving air taxi market.
With this transaction, Archer consolidates its position as a leading player in the emerging urban air mobility sector. Meanwhile, the fate of Lilium’s remaining assets and the ambitions of other bidders remain uncertain.
