Boeing and Sun PhuQuoc Airways Confirm Order for Up to 40 787 Dreamliners
Washington, Feb. 18, 2026 – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Sun PhuQuoc Airways have formalized a landmark agreement for up to 40 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, marking the largest widebody order in Vietnamese aviation history. Announced at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., the deal positions the newly established Vietnam-based carrier to make the 787 Dreamliner the cornerstone of its widebody fleet, aligning with its strategic vision to enhance tourism and economic development on Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island.
Strategic Partnership and Fleet Vision
Sun PhuQuoc Airways, a luxury airline supported by Sun Group, plans to deploy the ultra-efficient, long-range 787-9 model to connect international travelers to its hub at the soon-to-open Phu Quoc International Airport. Dang Minh Truong, chairman of Sun Group, emphasized the significance of the partnership, stating, “Our collaboration with Boeing establishes a strong foundation for building a world-class airline that operates in harmony with the tourism and resort ecosystem Sun Group has developed. We selected the Boeing 787-9 not only for its superior operational performance but because it is the most suitable aircraft type to realize our vision of bringing Phu Quoc to the world and bringing the world to Phu Quoc.”
The 787-9’s impressive range of 7,565 nautical miles (14,010 kilometers) will enable Sun PhuQuoc Airways to efficiently link Phu Quoc with major cities and tourist destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America. The Dreamliner is renowned for its passenger comfort, featuring the largest windows of any widebody aircraft and a lower cabin altitude pressurization system, which helps travelers arrive feeling more refreshed.
Industry Context and Market Dynamics
Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, highlighted the importance of the agreement, noting, “We are excited to work with Sun PhuQuoc Airways as they join other global airlines in flying the 787 Dreamliner, which connects the most countries of any widebody fleet. The 787-9’s unmatched range, fuel efficiency, and passenger comfort will give the airline flexibility to open new long-haul markets, lower operating costs, and contribute to local tourism growth.”
Since its introduction in 2011, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner family has enabled airlines worldwide to launch over 535 new nonstop routes and has transported more than 1.2 billion passengers, significantly enhancing global connectivity.
Nevertheless, Boeing’s agreement with Sun PhuQuoc Airways comes amid intensifying competition in the widebody aircraft market. Rival Airbus has recently secured substantial orders from carriers such as Air Europa and Delta Air Lines, both of which have shifted focus to Airbus A350-900s and A330-900s. This trend poses challenges to Boeing’s market share, particularly in the narrowbody segment where Airbus maintains a strong lead. Despite these competitive pressures, demand for Boeing’s widebody aircraft remains robust, with United Airlines scheduled to receive 20 Boeing 787s in 2026 and Delta placing its first-ever order for the Dreamliner.
As Southeast Asia anticipates significant growth in air travel over the coming two decades, Vietnam’s aviation sector is poised for expansion. The Sun PhuQuoc Airways order underscores Boeing’s ongoing efforts to compete in a dynamic global market while supporting the region’s connectivity and tourism ambitions.
