Brazil Certifies HondaJet Elite II, Highlighting Over-Wing Engine Design
Honda Aircraft Company has achieved a significant milestone with the delivery of its first HondaJet Elite II to Brazil, following official type validation by the country’s National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC). This certification culminates a decade of engineering development and expands Honda’s presence in a market that now hosts nine HondaJets. The delivery was facilitated by Lider Aviação, Honda’s exclusive sales representative in Brazil and the largest private aviation company in Latin America. The event coincided with LABACE 2026, the region’s premier business aviation conference held from August 4 to 6 at São Paulo’s Campo de Marte Airport.
The Elite II, bearing serial number 42000276 and registered as PS-MTO, departed from Honda Aircraft’s Greensboro, North Carolina facility on July 22. Its journey to Sorocaba, Brazil, included multiple stops in Fort Lauderdale, Aguadilla, Bridgetown, Boa Vista, Paraíso do Tocantins, Goiânia, and Vitória, as tracked by ch-aviation.
Engineering Breakthrough: Over-Wing Engine Mounts
The HondaJet Elite II is distinguished by its innovative over-the-wing engine mount configuration, a design that challenges longstanding aerodynamic conventions. Unlike most very light jets (VLJs), which position engines on the rear fuselage, the Elite II’s twin turbofan engines are mounted on pylons above the wing at approximately 75% of the wing chord. This placement was once considered an engineering taboo due to concerns about increased drag.
Historically, over-wing engine designs, such as the 1970s VFW-Fokker 614, suffered from excessive wave drag caused by shockwaves at cruise speeds, leading to commercial failure and industry skepticism. Conventional wisdom held that at typical cruise speeds of Mach 0.75 (around 422 knots at 30,000 feet), over-wing engines would exacerbate drag rather than reduce it.
Honda’s research, led by designer Michimasa Fujino, overturned this assumption through three years of computational fluid dynamics analysis and wind tunnel testing. The studies demonstrated that positioning the engines at a specific chord location creates a “favorable interference” effect, where airflow over the wing and around the engine nacelle interact constructively. This phenomenon reduces wave drag, resulting in a cabin that is larger, quieter, and more fuel-efficient than those of competing VLJs.
Market Impact and Competitive Landscape
The certification of the Elite II opens new opportunities within Brazil’s owner-operator and commercial charter markets, where its advanced design and performance advantages are expected to generate significant interest. However, the aircraft enters a competitive environment dominated by established models such as the Cirrus Vision Jet, which benefits from a more mature resale market and a broader customer base.
HondaJet’s previous runway excursion incidents may also influence market perception, although the company has taken steps to address these safety concerns. As the Elite II gains traction, competitors are likely to respond with pricing strategies or feature enhancements to maintain their market positions in the dynamic business aviation sector.
