FAA Issues Directive for Immediate Inspection of Rotax Gearboxes
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a critical airworthiness directive mandating immediate inspections of certain Rotax 912 and 914-series engines. This action follows the discovery that a recently manufactured propeller gearbox was missing essential components, raising significant safety concerns. The directive, published on Thursday and effective from August 28, applies to approximately 180 engines installed on U.S.-registered aircraft.
Safety Concerns and Inspection Requirements
Rotax, the engine manufacturer, identified that some gearboxes were produced without an oil spray nozzle and the screws necessary to secure the propeller shaft bearing. The FAA warns that the absence of these parts could allow the propeller shaft bearing to shift, potentially causing a loss of engine oil, in-flight engine shutdown, and ultimately, loss of aircraft control.
The affected gearboxes are specifically listed by serial number in Rotax Alert Service Bulletin ASB-2026-001R00. Under the FAA directive, engines with fewer than 25 hours of service must undergo inspection before any further flight after the directive’s effective date. Engines with 25 hours or more must be inspected within five hours of operation. Should any gearbox be found missing the required components, it must be replaced prior to the aircraft’s next flight.
The FAA estimates the cost of inspection at approximately $170 per engine, while replacement of a gearbox could reach around $5,900.
