H160 Helicopter Sees Growth as 2025 Orders Approach Parity

H160 Helicopter Narrows Lead Over AW139 as 2025 Orders Surge
Airbus Helicopters’ H160 is rapidly gaining momentum in the medium twin-engine helicopter market, approaching order parity with Leonardo’s long-established AW139 as 2025 draws near. In a striking development, Airbus reported 30 firm commitments for the H160 last year, a significant increase from just four orders in 2024. This surge underscores the growing acceptance of the H160 as a serious competitor to the AW139, which has dominated civil and parapublic sales in this segment for many years.
Although Leonardo has not yet released its 2025 order figures, industry analysts suggest the company is unlikely to relinquish market share without a strategic response. Persistent, though officially denied, rumors indicate that a MkII version of the AW139 may be undergoing flight testing. This upgraded model is expected to feature enhanced avionics and a new Pratt & Whitney Canada engine, potentially the developmental PW220, aimed at maintaining the AW139’s competitive edge.
Expanding Market Presence and Operational Challenges
The H160’s growing market traction is reflected in its expanding customer base across critical mission sectors such as law enforcement, public services, and the energy industry. The helicopter is now operational offshore with PHI in the United States and Omni Táxi Aéreo in Brazil. During a presentation of order and delivery figures on January 26, Airbus Helicopters CEO Bruno Even emphasized the platform’s “positive momentum,” highlighting that the H160 now serves “all the key mission segments.”
However, the H160’s entry into service has not been without difficulties. A ditching incident involving an Omni-operated H160 off the Brazilian coast on January 2 triggered regulatory scrutiny. In response, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) issued a directive mandating pitch rod replacements. This development has raised concerns regarding the helicopter’s operational reliability and the potential for increased maintenance costs among operators.
Military Variant and Broader Product Line Developments
Airbus Helicopters is also advancing the militarized H160M variant, with the first prototype having flown in 2025. Originally developed for all three branches of the French armed forces under the HIL program, the company is actively pursuing export opportunities. While CEO Bruno Even refrained from commenting on specific sales campaigns, he noted “good progress” in the H160M’s flight-test program and highlighted strong momentum in the defense market as countries seek to modernize their helicopter fleets.
Beyond the H160, Airbus Helicopters continues to develop its wider product portfolio. The company is progressing with the H175M, following a launch order from Spain in 2025 for six units. Overall, Airbus secured 15 orders for the H175 last year. A landmark 100-helicopter contract from the Spanish military in late December contributed to a record-breaking year, with Airbus Helicopters booking 544 gross orders in 2025, up from 455 the previous year.
Other notable performers included the H125 and H130 light singles, which collectively garnered 176 orders, and the H145 light twin, which achieved 149 orders—marking its third consecutive year exceeding 100 commitments. The H145’s order book notably includes major contracts with Spain (50 units) and Germany.
As the H160 continues to close the gap with the AW139, the medium twin-engine helicopter market is set for intensified competition. Both manufacturers are expected to pursue further technological and operational enhancements to sustain their market positions amid evolving regulatory requirements and operational challenges.
