Insights from ILA Berlin
The 2026 ILA Berlin trade show, held from 10 to 14 June at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), showcased the latest advancements in autonomous systems, networked combat architectures, artificial intelligence, and aerospace innovation. The event attracted over 750 exhibitors from 37 countries and more than 300 delegations representing 60 nations. Serving as a pivotal forum for government officials, industry leaders, defense organizations, and research institutions, the exhibition featured over 100 aircraft on display and included contributions from more than 400 speakers.
This year marked the inaugural participation of the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) as an exhibitor, represented by its German Branch alongside numerous corporate partners such as MBDA, Rolls-Royce, Safran, Rheinmetall, CAE, Emirates, Leonardo, Airbus, Lockheed Martin (Sikorsky), Northrop Grumman, General Electric, Honeywell, and Eurofighter.
Political Significance and Strategic Priorities
The event’s political importance was underscored by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who officially opened the show and introduced Germany’s new national aviation strategy. Chancellor Merz characterized aerospace as “a key strategic sector,” emphasizing the necessity of pursuing competitiveness, innovation, security, and sustainability in unison. He positioned Germany and Europe as leading aerospace powers, highlighting the sector’s critical role in economic and security policy amid rising defense expenditures, supply chain challenges, and intensifying global competition.
Technological Advances and Market Dynamics
Among the technological highlights, Airbus Defence unveiled the U760 Ravenstorm, a next-generation Uncrewed Collaborative Combat Aircraft (UCCA) designed to perform air-to-air, air-to-ground, and electronic warfare missions by 2032. Eurofighter’s Typhoon, a cornerstone of European air deterrence, featured prominently in the flying display, demonstrating upgrades in sensors, connectivity, munitions, and electronic warfare systems. The ongoing evolution of the Typhoon, alongside the integration of UCCA platforms, is expected to sustain its operational relevance into the 2060s.
Lockheed Martin’s F-35A Lightning II was presented in a static display ahead of its planned entry into German service in 2027. Airbus also showcased an extensive portfolio of uncrewed systems, including the U145 helicopter, U740 Valkyrie, and U950 Eurodrone.
Boeing, in collaboration with Rheinmetall, revealed an enhanced version of the MQ-28 Ghost Bat tailored for the German Luftwaffe. This development signals intensifying competition among defense contractors, as similar offerings from other manufacturers compete for market share. Australia’s progress with the MQ-28A Ghost Bat and the U.S. Air Force’s projected acquisition of over 1,000 Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) by 2036 further illustrate the sector’s rapid expansion.
The debut of Leonardo’s AW249 attack helicopter and Diehl Defence’s Cobra 600 airborne launch rail attracted significant market interest, potentially prompting competitive responses from rival firms. Concurrently, the German Navy’s transition to the Sea Tiger capability and plans for the Sea Lion are expected to influence naval defense market dynamics.
International Participation and Strategic Cooperation
Despite ongoing regional tensions, Israeli companies maintained a strong presence at ILA Berlin, underscoring continued defense cooperation and emerging market opportunities with Germany and other European partners.
Lt Gen Holger Neumann, Commander of the Luftwaffe, emphasized during the event that the evolving security environment necessitates greater integration of uncrewed platforms alongside advanced air and missile defense capabilities. The innovations and strategic partnerships showcased at ILA Berlin reflect the shifting landscape of European and global aerospace and defense, as industry and governments adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
