Investigation Underway After Plane Crash Near Lancaster
LANCASTER, S.C. — Authorities are conducting an investigation following the crash of a small aircraft early Thursday morning near a scrap yard at the intersection of West Brooklyn Avenue and Springdale Road in Lancaster. The twin-engine Beechcraft, heavily damaged by impact and fire, carried two pilots who were both transported to a hospital burn unit. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.
Flight Details and Crash Circumstances
Flight records show that the aircraft, owned by Pressley Aviation LLC—a flight school based in Stanly County—departed from Laredo, Texas, on Wednesday night. After a brief stop in Poplarville, Mississippi, the plane was en route to Stanly County Regional Airport. The aircraft was last tracked near the crash site at approximately 1 a.m.
Communications with air traffic control revealed that the pilots reported engine trouble prior to attempting an emergency landing near Lancaster. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the crash occurred around 12:45 a.m. Both occupants sustained injuries when the plane caught fire, though it remains unclear which pilot was at the controls at the time of the incident.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and FAA have launched a joint investigation to determine the cause of the crash. No additional information has been released regarding the events leading up to the accident.
Context of Recent Aviation Incidents
This crash adds to a series of recent aviation tragedies currently under investigation across the United States and abroad. On June 15, a United States Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed near Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California, resulting in the deaths of all eight crew members. The bomber went down shortly after takeoff during a test mission for a radar modernization program. The cause of the crash remains undetermined, with officials anticipating the investigation will require several months.
Earlier in June, a Gulfstream G200 private jet crashed near La Romana, Dominican Republic, killing two U.S. crew members. The aircraft, en route to pick up former Major League Baseball star Yadier Molina in Texas, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff before crashing near La Romana International Airport. Dominican aviation authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Additionally, a skydiving plane crash in Butler, Missouri, on June 14 resulted in 12 fatalities. The NTSB continues to investigate the cause of that crash, which remains unknown.
As these investigations proceed, aviation authorities are emphasizing the importance of safety reviews and caution within the industry. Further updates on the Lancaster crash will be provided as new information emerges.
