MROs Develop New Strategy in Broward County
Expansion Driven by Strategic Location and Opportunity
GA Telesis CEO Abdol Moabery highlights both opportunity and geographic advantage as central to the company’s recent expansion in Broward County. “We wanted to grow the company and expand the reach of our talent pool,” Moabery explains. “Now, we’re smack in the middle of three large counties that do a lot of work in aerospace.” This strategic positioning allows GA Telesis to tap into a rich labor market and benefit from the region’s established aviation ecosystem.
Florida’s aviation heritage, shaped by industry pioneers such as Pan Am and Eastern Air Lines, continues to influence the state’s economic landscape. Today, Florida hosts one of the world’s largest aviation and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) sectors. According to IBISWorld, the state’s MRO industry is valued at approximately $4.9 billion, with more than $2.75 billion concentrated in Broward County, anchored by the greater Fort Lauderdale area.
Industry Commitment and Growth in Broward County
In recent months, several major aviation companies have reinforced their commitment to Broward County through significant capital investments and facility expansions. Notable among these are GA Telesis, VSE, and Ontic. VSE, a $2 billion MRO firm, recently relocated its headquarters from Northern Virginia to Miramar, further solidifying Broward’s status as a key MRO hub.
GA Telesis, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, made headlines in March 2025 with its acquisition of AAR’s Miami-based landing gear overhaul and wheels and brakes businesses. This acquisition positions GA Telesis as the largest independent landing gear MRO in the Americas. The company also secured a five-year landing gear overhaul agreement with a major U.S. carrier, covering Airbus A320-family assemblies at its Medley, Florida facility.
Moabery underscores the strategic advantages Broward County offers. While the company initially established itself in Miami due to its longstanding aviation hub status, Broward presented a superior quality of life for employees and access to a broader talent pool. The proximity to educational institutions such as Palm Beach State, Broward College, Florida International University, and the University of Miami has been instrumental in recruitment efforts. Additionally, the closeness to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) has facilitated rapid growth. “If the infrastructure wasn’t here, we wouldn’t be able to scale. The growth in air traffic flying out of FLL has been significant,” Moabery notes. The company also benefits from convenient access to Palm Beach International and Miami International airports.
Challenges Amidst Expansion
Despite the region’s advantages, MRO firms face several challenges as they develop new strategies in Broward County. Managing capacity constraints at local facilities, including animal care centers, has become increasingly important amid regional growth. Companies must also navigate evolving economic and market conditions alongside intensified competition from other healthcare and service providers. These factors may influence consumer behavior, prompting a search for alternative service sources, while competitors may adjust their offerings and market positioning to maintain their share.
Nonetheless, Broward County’s robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and strategic location continue to attract leading MRO firms, reinforcing the region’s role as a powerhouse in the global aviation industry.
