NAC Prepares Global Tender for Overhaul of Two Widebody Aircraft Worth Rs 5 Billion

Nepal Airlines Corporation to Launch Rs 5 Billion Global Tender for Widebody Aircraft Overhaul
KATHMANDU — Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) is set to issue a global tender valued at approximately Rs 5 billion for the comprehensive overhaul of its two Airbus A330 widebody aircraft, Makalu and Annapurna. Both aircraft are nearing the regulatory overhaul threshold of 6,000 flight cycles, seven years after entering commercial service, necessitating urgent maintenance to ensure continued airworthiness.
Overhaul Schedule and Tender Process
According to NAC Technical Spokesperson Devendra Pun, Makalu has around 400 flight cycles remaining, while Annapurna has approximately 500 cycles left. “With so few cycles remaining, we are at a critical juncture for initiating the overhaul process,” Pun stated. The overhaul will be conducted sequentially, with Makalu scheduled for maintenance by mid-September this year and Annapurna by mid-January 2027.
The tender will encompass both aircraft under a single contract and will adhere strictly to Nepal’s Public Procurement Act and its regulations. The process requires an eight- to twelve-month lead time prior to the scheduled overhaul, which includes a 45-day notice period, handling of objections, technical and financial evaluations, and contract finalization. By law, the contract must be awarded to the lowest qualified bidder. The tender notice, initially planned for release by February 17, was delayed due to the absence of NAC’s Executive Director and is now expected to be published by February 20.
Each Airbus A330 overhaul is anticipated to take a minimum of four months. This timeline coincides with Nepal’s major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, periods of peak passenger demand. Grounding an aircraft during these festivals could result in significant financial losses for NAC. To mitigate this risk, the corporation is preparing a separate tender to lease engines rather than entire aircraft, citing the higher costs and operational complexities associated with leasing full aircraft. “Leasing engines is a more viable solution for us,” Pun explained, adding that leased engines will also be utilized during Annapurna’s maintenance period.
Market Context and Operational Challenges
NAC’s overhaul plans are unfolding amid broader challenges in the global aviation market. Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury has recently underscored ongoing supply chain disruptions and a backlog in aircraft deliveries, factors that may affect the availability of overhaul slots and spare parts. Concurrently, Airbus’s new commercial aircraft chief, Lars Wagner, has announced ambitions to increase widebody production rates, which could influence maintenance provider capacity and scheduling.
Competitive dynamics in the widebody segment are also evolving. Boeing continues to dominate deliveries, having supplied eight of the nine widebody aircraft delivered globally in January 2026, compared to a single delivery from Airbus. Additionally, Air India’s ongoing fleet renewal and potential new orders for Boeing 787s may further impact market demand and maintenance timelines.
Despite these complexities, NAC remains resolute in completing the overhaul within the mandated timeframe. Pun noted that Airbus itself may participate among international bidders, and if engines are leased directly from the manufacturer, a separate tender for engines would not be required.
NAC acquired the Airbus A330 aircraft Makalu and Annapurna from France’s AAR company in mid-2018. As the corporation navigates regulatory compliance and global market pressures, the timely overhaul of its widebody fleet remains a critical operational priority.
