Passenger Jet Makes Emergency Landing After Engine Shutdown
An Air France passenger jet was compelled to execute an emergency landing in Lyon on Saturday evening after one of its engines was shut down mid-flight over France. The aircraft, operating flight AF7562 from Paris to Ajaccio in Corsica, diverted to Lyon at approximately 6:00 p.m. local time following a reported engine failure, according to French media outlets including RTL, Corse-Matin, and Libération.
Incident and Passenger Accounts
Passengers aboard the flight described a distressing experience as the situation unfolded. One traveler recounted to RTL that the plane suddenly plummeted, while another passenger, Steven, recalled hearing a loud bang accompanied by intense vibrations as the aircraft passed over Clermont-Ferrand in central France. Initially believing the noise to be a joke, he soon realized the gravity of the situation. Another passenger, Christelle, reported seeing flames on the plane’s wing after the incident.
Aviation experts cited by Agence France-Presse attributed the flames to a phenomenon known as “engine pumping,” which occurs when air pockets form inside an engine, causing vibrations that may prompt the crew to shut it down as a precautionary measure. One expert noted that flames observed at the engine nozzle could have been brief and contained within the engine itself.
The sudden loss of power and ensuing emergency procedures caused significant alarm among those on board. Passengers described an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty, with some crying and others remaining silent. One passenger recalled the tense environment, likening the cabin to “sardines in a tin can,” with no control over the unfolding events. Christelle added that warning lights were flashing throughout the cabin, and a man nearby clutched his children, fearing a crash.
Emergency Response and Aftermath
Passengers were instructed to prepare for a potentially hazardous landing and to consult the emergency landing manual. Firefighters were stationed on the runway in anticipation of the aircraft’s arrival. The plane ultimately landed safely in Lyon after 37 minutes in the air.
Air France confirmed the diversion in a statement to AFP, emphasizing that the flight concluded without further incident. No injuries were reported among passengers or crew.
This emergency landing occurs amid increased scrutiny of airline safety following a recent engine failure on United Airlines flight 803, which also necessitated an emergency landing. These incidents have prompted regulatory authorities to review safety protocols and operational procedures across the aviation industry. Market responses have included heightened attention to airlines’ safety records, with competitors underscoring their operational reliability. The events have reignited discussions regarding aircraft engine reliability and the ongoing imperative for enhanced safety measures.
Air France has announced that an internal investigation is underway, and authorities are expected to conduct a thorough review of the incident as part of broader efforts to ensure passenger safety.
