Rolls-Royce and Turkish Technic Begin Construction of Advanced Aero Engine Maintenance Facility

Rolls-Royce and Turkish Technic Launch Construction of Advanced Aero Engine Maintenance Facility in Istanbul
Rolls-Royce and Turkish Technic have initiated the construction of a cutting-edge aero engine maintenance facility at Istanbul Airport, marking a significant expansion in their maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities. Scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027, the new center will offer comprehensive maintenance services for Rolls-Royce’s Trent XWB-97, Trent XWB-84, and Trent 7000 engines, which power the Airbus A350 and Airbus A330neo aircraft.
Expanding Global MRO Capacity
Announced in May 2025 as the latest addition to Rolls-Royce’s global MRO network, the facility is designed to accommodate up to 200 shop visits annually, positioning it among the largest maintenance centers in the region. It will serve Rolls-Royce TotalCare customers worldwide, as well as the Turkish Airlines fleet, thereby reinforcing Turkish Technic’s status as a leading maintenance provider. This development aligns with Rolls-Royce’s strategic objective to meet the growing demand for civil large engine services.
Rob Watson, President of Civil Aerospace at Rolls-Royce, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “Breaking ground on Turkish Technic’s new state-of-the-art facility is a significant milestone for our global MRO network, which supports our TotalCare customers around the world. We’re significantly increasing our global MRO capacity by 2030, and today’s announcement marks another step on that journey. It reinforces our strong partnership with Turkish Airlines—whose fleet of Airbus A350s will be supported by this facility—and underlines Turkish Technic’s commitment to become a leading provider of civil large aero engine MRO.”
Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and Executive Committee at Turkish Technic, highlighted the strategic value of the investment, noting, “We are pleased to further strengthen our long-standing partnership with one of the world’s leading engine manufacturers through the groundbreaking of our new engine maintenance facility. Set to become one of Europe’s largest maintenance centers for Trent engine models, this investment represents a major expansion of our technical capabilities and service capacity to continue providing the highest quality services for our customers all around the world. Through this facility, we will deliver comprehensive maintenance and support services across a broad range of Trent engines, ensuring that Rolls-Royce TotalCare customers receive best-in-class service. Aligned with our centennial 2033 objectives, this milestone partnership continues to reinforce Türkiye’s growing role as a global hub for aviation.”
Strategic Context and Industry Implications
The project follows Turkish Airlines’ landmark order in late 2023 for Airbus A350 aircraft, which positioned the airline as the world’s largest operator of the Trent XWB engine, with orders for 120 Trent XWB-84 and 40 Trent XWB-97 engines. This development underscores the strategic importance of the new facility in supporting a rapidly expanding fleet.
Despite its promise, the construction and operation of the facility present considerable challenges. Rolls-Royce and Turkish Technic must navigate complex regulatory and logistical frameworks, ensure strict adherence to international aviation standards, and manage substantial financial and operational risks. The initiative has attracted attention from industry stakeholders, as it may alter competitive dynamics within the global MRO market. Competitors such as GE Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney are likely to respond by accelerating their own investments in advanced engine maintenance capabilities to safeguard market share.
As the facility progresses toward completion, its performance will be closely monitored as an indicator of evolving trends in global aero engine maintenance and the competitive strategies of leading aerospace companies.
