Safran Initiates Ground Testing of Full-Scale Hybrid-Electric Demonstrator
Safran Aircraft Engines has commenced a comprehensive ground testing campaign for its PHILEAS hybrid-electric demonstrator at the company’s Istres facility in southern France. Backed by the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC), this initiative is a critical component of Safran’s broader decarbonization strategy, aiming to advance hybrid-electric propulsion technologies for future aircraft engines.
Advancing Hybrid-Electric Propulsion Technologies
The PHILEAS demonstrator serves as a full-scale experimental platform rather than a production engine, designed to explore and validate advanced hybrid-electric propulsion concepts. These innovations are intended to power the next generation of short- and medium-haul airliners. Hybrid-electric propulsion, alongside emerging engine architectures such as Open Fan technologies and the integration of sustainable aviation fuels, constitutes a central pillar in Safran’s efforts to reduce emissions and enhance fuel efficiency.
According to Safran’s statement released on July 16, the demonstrator is equipped with two 250kW motor-generators mounted on the high-pressure and low-pressure shafts. These motor-generators are capable of operating both as electric motors and power generators, supported by sophisticated onboard power electronics and an integrated electrical power distribution system. The testing campaign, projected to span approximately six months and encompass nearly 300 hours of operation, will assess the integration and performance of these systems under conditions that simulate real-world flight operations.
Objectives and Industry Context
The primary objectives of the campaign include validating the physical and functional integration of hybrid-electric systems within the engine architecture, examining advanced power management scenarios such as power balancing and transfer between shafts, and managing power exchanges between the engine and the aircraft. Testing will be conducted on Safran’s open-air test stands, replicating various engine operating conditions and flight phases.
Safran regards hybrid-electric propulsion as a promising avenue for next-generation aircraft engines but acknowledges the considerable technical challenges involved. The integration of advanced motor-generators and power electronics must be achieved without compromising engine performance or reliability. To address these complexities, Safran’s experts in electrical systems, engine control, and integration are collaborating closely, with Safran Electrical and Power spearheading the design of the electrical components.
Market responses to Safran’s initiative have been varied. While some industry stakeholders express optimism about the potential for emissions reduction and improved fuel efficiency, others raise concerns regarding the complexity and cost implications of adopting hybrid-electric systems.
