Safran unit wins contract for Al Ain MRO test cell facility

Safran Unit Secures Contract for Al Ain MRO Test Cell Facility
Sanad, the global aerospace engineering and asset management company owned by Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Investment Company, has awarded a contract to Safran Test Cells, a subsidiary of Safran Aero Boosters, for the design, supply, and construction of a new test cell facility at Sanad’s upcoming GTF Engine Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) Center in Al Ain. This agreement represents a significant advancement in the UAE’s strategy to expand its aviation ecosystem and highlights the strategic importance of the GTF Engine MRO Centre, the first facility of its kind in the South Asia, Middle East, and Africa (SAMEA) region.
Expanding MRO Capabilities in the SAMEA Region
The new test cell complex, situated within the Sanad GTF Engine MRO Center and part of Al Ain’s Aerospace Cluster, is poised to become a central element of Sanad’s next-generation MRO capabilities. While specifically designed to support GTF engine programs, the facility will also accommodate a wide range of narrow-body and wide-body aircraft engines. This versatility will enable Sanad to offer testing and validation services to multiple original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and international airline partners, broadening its service portfolio.
The facility will be equipped with two 12×12-meter test cells featuring advanced systems to test, measure, and validate engine performance following maintenance or overhaul. These systems are designed to ensure compliance with the highest global standards of safety, efficiency, and reliability. Upon becoming operational, the center will have the capacity to conduct over 500 full-engine tests annually, establishing it as one of the most advanced and productive test cell facilities in the region. This project will also mark the UAE’s third civil aviation test cell and the largest of its kind in the region, significantly enhancing the country’s MRO infrastructure and expanding Sanad’s engine testing capabilities.
Industry Challenges and Competitive Landscape
The contract is awarded amid broader industry challenges, including slower-than-anticipated production ramp-ups for turboshaft engines, as reported by Aviation Week. These factors may affect project timelines and operational readiness. Furthermore, the regional MRO market is becoming increasingly competitive. Other entities such as UAMCO are advancing their own test cell projects, while Airbus Helicopters recently secured a major HCare support contract for the UAE’s A400M fleet. Competitors like AMAC are also intensifying investments in MRO capabilities to meet growing demand, signaling a shift in market dynamics that could influence future business opportunities for both Sanad and Safran.
Mansoor Janahi, Managing Director and Group CEO of Sanad, underscored the strategic significance of the partnership, stating, “Partnering with Safran Test Cells on this project marks a defining milestone in Sanad’s mission to build the Middle East’s most advanced engine MRO ecosystem. Test cells are at the core of every world-class MRO operation, ensuring every engine leaving our facility meets the highest global standards of precision, reliability, and safety.”
François Lepot, CEO of Safran Aero Boosters, added, “This collaboration with Sanad represents a key milestone for Safran Test Cells and a strong signal of trust in our ability to deliver high-performance engine testing solutions. The new facility will benefit from our expertise in civil aviation programs and will be designed to meet the highest standards of precision and reliability.”
As the UAE continues to invest in advanced aerospace infrastructure, the new test cell facility is expected to reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a regional hub for aviation engineering and technology, even as the sector navigates evolving challenges and heightened competition.
