UK Government Launches New Phase of Reach Program

UK Government Launches New Phase of Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund
The UK Government has announced a new round of funding for its Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund, committing £750,000 to support organisations that inspire young people from disadvantaged and underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in aviation. Now in its fifth year, the initiative targets individuals aged 16 and over, aiming to increase awareness of the diverse career opportunities available within the aviation sector, including piloting, engineering, aircraft maintenance, and emerging aerospace technologies.
Expanding Opportunities in Aviation
Since its launch, the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund has invested over £3 million, backing 46 organisations and reaching more than one million young people through mentoring, careers events, STEM activities, and interactive learning programmes. The latest funding announcement follows the Farnborough International Airshow, where government officials highlighted that new investments secured at the event are expected to generate a significant number of highly skilled jobs across the UK aviation industry.
Aviation Minister Keir Mather underscored the importance of inclusivity within the sector, stating, “Aviation careers should be open to every young person with the ambition and talent to succeed, regardless of background. We’ve delivered more than £3 million to help over a million young Brits see aviation as a career they can be part of—whether as a pilot, engineer, air traffic controller, or ground handler. With record passenger numbers last year and plans to grow our aviation sector, our funding will help bring in the skilled workforce of the future to drive economic growth.”
The programme specifically aims to address the barriers faced by young people from lower working-class backgrounds, who are statistically more likely to be not in education, employment, or training (NEET). Funding will support projects that enhance access to industry networks, provide practical learning experiences, and raise awareness of aviation careers.
Challenges and Industry Context
The launch of this new funding phase comes amid broader challenges confronting the UK’s aviation and energy sectors. Industry stakeholders have called for greater revenue certainty, regulatory simplicity, and clearer long-term policy frameworks to unlock investment in clean energy flexibility and modernised energy systems. Market analysts anticipate increased scrutiny and demand for transparent, stable regulatory environments as the sector evolves. Competitors are expected to focus on leveraging technological advancements, addressing security threats, and accelerating the decarbonisation of energy systems, all while fostering economic growth through innovation.
According to Skills England, demand for skilled workers across sectors such as transport is projected to increase by 24% over the next decade, necessitating up to 1.8 million additional workers. The government also reported that UK airports handled a record 302 million passengers in 2025, with annual passenger numbers forecast to reach approximately 465 million by 2050.
Applications for the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund will be evaluated by a joint panel from the Department for Transport and the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), which administers the scheme. Sophie Jones, head of customer experience and STEM sponsor at the CAA, affirmed the authority’s commitment to supporting the next generation: “At the CAA, we remain committed to enabling the next generation, regardless of background, to shape the future of the aerospace sector. The Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund plays a vital role in supporting organisations that inspire young people to explore opportunities across the sector. By raising awareness, building confidence, and widening access, these initiatives help break down barriers and empower more young people to pursue careers in aviation and aerospace.”
