VietJet Orders 20 Airbus Aircraft During Macron’s Visit to Hanoi

VietJet Expands Fleet with New Airbus Order Amid Macron’s Hanoi Visit
HANOI — Vietnamese low-cost carrier VietJet has placed a new order for 20 Airbus A330neo wide-body aircraft, coinciding with French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Hanoi. The agreement, signed by VietJet chairwoman Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao and Airbus executive Wouter van Wersch, increases the airline’s total A330neo commitments to 40 jets, following a similar purchase made last year.
Strategic Expansion and Market Positioning
Although VietJet has not disclosed the financial details or delivery schedule of the deal, the airline emphasized that the acquisition is part of its strategic expansion plan over the next decade. The airline aims to strengthen its foothold in the competitive low-cost carrier market by broadening its network across the Asia-Pacific region and exploring potential long-haul routes to Europe.
Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao highlighted that the new order will support VietJet’s global flight network expansion. Airbus’s Wouter van Wersch expressed pride in the airline’s choice of the A330neo as its preferred wide-body aircraft, underscoring the ongoing partnership as VietJet extends its international reach.
Economic and Industry Implications
The timing of the deal during Macron’s visit underscores the deepening economic ties between France and Vietnam. Market analysts have responded positively to VietJet’s expansion plans, suggesting that the order may prompt competing low-cost carriers to reconsider their fleet strategies in light of VietJet’s aggressive growth ambitions.
This announcement also occurs amid ongoing trade negotiations between Vietnam and the United States, aimed at avoiding steep tariffs on Vietnamese exports. VietJet has previously indicated intentions to purchase Boeing aircraft, a move viewed by officials as a means to help balance Vietnam’s significant trade surplus with the U.S. The airline currently holds an outstanding agreement to acquire 200 Boeing 737 MAX jets, originally signed in 2016 and subsequently revised, though deliveries have yet to commence.
As VietJet advances its fleet expansion and international presence, industry observers will closely monitor competitors’ responses and the impact of the airline’s dual sourcing strategy involving both Airbus and Boeing on the regional aviation landscape.
