AirAsia Orders 150 Airbus A220 Aircraft Powered by Pratt & Whitney Engines

AirAsia Commits to 150 Airbus A220 Aircraft Equipped with Pratt & Whitney Engines
AirAsia has placed a landmark order for 150 Airbus A220 aircraft, all powered by Pratt & Whitney’s Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines, with deliveries scheduled to commence in 2028. The agreement includes a comprehensive 12-year EngineWise service contract for engine maintenance, reflecting AirAsia’s focus on operational reliability and efficiency. This substantial order propels the total firm commitments for the Airbus A220 program beyond 1,000 units, underscoring the aircraft’s expanding global appeal.
Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury described the deal as a “massive vote of confidence” in the A220’s performance and market potential. Rick Deurloo, president of Commercial Engines at Pratt & Whitney, welcomed AirAsia to the GTF engine family, highlighting the engine’s advanced technology and fuel efficiency. Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia X, emphasized that the A220’s range of up to seven hours, enabled by the GTF engines, will allow the airline to broaden its network and improve connectivity across Asia. Lingam noted, “This plane gives us the ability to build the biggest and densest network, serving as a vital tool for efficiency.”
Founded in 2001, AirAsia is a leading low-cost carrier operating more than 250 aircraft across Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia. The integration of the new A220s into its existing fleet will present operational challenges, including crew training and the transition to Pratt & Whitney engines. Nevertheless, the market response has been positive, with industry analysts suggesting that other low-cost carriers may pursue similar acquisitions to maintain competitiveness.
Pratt & Whitney’s GTF Engines and RTX’s Broader Performance
The GTF-powered aircraft fleet now exceeds 2,700 planes operated by over 90 customers worldwide. Since entering service, these engines have logged 50 million flying hours and transported 1.9 billion passengers. Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX Corporation, has amassed more than 13,000 GTF engine orders and commitments to date.
RTX, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia, reported sales exceeding $88 billion in 2025 and employs over 180,000 people globally. The company has demonstrated robust financial growth, with revenue reaching $90.37 billion over the past twelve months—an increase of nearly 11%. RTX shares have delivered a 37% return in the last year, although some analysts caution that the stock may be modestly overvalued relative to its fair value.
In recent corporate developments, RTX announced first-quarter 2026 earnings per share of $1.78, surpassing analyst expectations, alongside revenue of $22.1 billion. Raytheon, an RTX business unit, secured a $441.6 million contract modification from the U.S. Department of Defense for Patriot missile production and received an order for 120 SharpSight surveillance radars from Blue Raven. Additionally, Raytheon delivered its second missile warning sensor for the U.S. Space Force’s satellite program and declared a 7.4% increase in its quarterly dividend.
As AirAsia prepares to incorporate the new Airbus A220 aircraft into its fleet, this order not only enhances its operational capabilities but also signals ongoing growth and innovation within the global aviation industry.
