Airbus to Deliver 150 Jets to AirAsia in Major Deal

Airbus Secures Landmark Order for 150 Jets from AirAsia
AirAsia X Bhd has finalized a multibillion-dollar agreement to purchase 150 Airbus A220 jets, marking the largest order ever for the Canadian-built aircraft and the most significant for any commercial plane produced in Canada. The deal was signed at Airbus’s Mirabel, Quebec factory, with AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes joined by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette, and Airbus Commercial Aircraft CEO Lars Wagner.
The order, valued by Fernandes at approximately US$19 billion based on list prices, covers the A220-300 model, which can accommodate up to 160 passengers. Although the actual transaction value is expected to be considerably lower than the list price, the scale of the agreement underscores the growing global appeal of the A220 in the competitive aviation market.
Strategic Expansion and Industry Implications
In addition to the firm order, AirAsia secured purchase options for 150 units of a proposed larger variant, the A220-500, contingent on Airbus’s decision to proceed with its development. Fernandes urged Airbus executives to expedite approval for the stretched model, stating, “If they build this aircraft, AirAsia will buy another 150.” Airbus is anticipated to make a final decision on the A220-500 by November, with potential entry into service projected for 2032.
This substantial commitment from AirAsia provides a critical boost to the A220 program, which has yet to achieve profitability since Airbus acquired it from Bombardier Inc. in 2018. To date, Airbus has recorded approximately 1,100 orders for the jet, which is manufactured in both Mirabel and Mobile, Alabama.
The deal also highlights the importance of political support in advancing Canada’s aerospace sector. Prime Minister Carney, who has previously engaged with Fernandes to strengthen Canada-Asia business relations, was credited by the AirAsia CEO for playing a pivotal role in securing the agreement. Fernandes remarked, “He’s very popular in Asia. He’s been a great ambassador for Canada.”
Challenges and Market Impact
The magnitude of the order presents significant challenges for Airbus, including the need to ensure timely delivery of all 150 A220-300 aircraft, maintain production quality, and manage complex supply chain logistics effectively. The company’s ability to meet these demands will be closely monitored by industry analysts and investors.
Market reaction to the announcement has been largely positive, reflecting confidence in the A220’s market potential and Airbus’s competitive positioning. The deal is expected to intensify competition with Boeing, which may respond by accelerating its own aircraft development and marketing strategies to counter Airbus’s momentum with AirAsia.
As Airbus moves forward with fulfilling this record-breaking order, the transaction not only solidifies the A220’s status as a key player in the single-aisle jet market but also signals renewed collaboration between Canadian aerospace manufacturers and global carriers.
