BermudAir Begins LaGuardia Service with Mobile Airport Operations

BermudAir Launches LaGuardia-Bermuda Route with Innovative Mobile Operations
BermudAir has commenced its new non-stop service connecting New York’s LaGuardia Airport with Bermuda, introducing a pioneering mobile airport operation developed in partnership with Ink Innovation. Departing from traditional airport procedures, the airline employs Ink’s cloud-based, handheld passenger-handling technology to manage check-ins, document verification, bag tag printing, and boarding anywhere within LaGuardia’s historic Marine Air Terminal. This approach eliminates the need for fixed counters or self-service kiosks, offering a flexible and efficient passenger experience.
Addressing Operational Constraints at LaGuardia
LaGuardia Airport is known for its operational challenges, including strict slot controls, a short-haul perimeter rule, and limited terminal space. Ink Innovation’s mobile platform, Ink Touch, is specifically designed to mitigate these constraints by reducing queues, accelerating turnaround times, and supporting on-time performance in one of the busiest airports serving the U.S. business market. George Henderson, BermudAir’s Chief Operating Officer, emphasized the importance of adaptability and efficient space utilization at the Marine Air Terminal. He noted that Ink’s mobile system allows staff to assist passengers seamlessly throughout the terminal, enhancing operational flow and ensuring a reliable airport experience.
Navigating Disruptions Amid Government Shutdown
BermudAir’s launch coincides with a turbulent period for New York-area airports, marked by widespread flight cancellations and delays. These disruptions have been intensified by the ongoing government shutdown, which has led to a 10% reduction in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airspace capacity and significant staffing shortages. The resulting operational challenges have affected LaGuardia and other major hubs, prompting increased scrutiny of airline performance and raising concerns about further difficulties across the aviation sector.
Despite these obstacles, BermudAir continues to leverage Ink Innovation’s technology to streamline its airport operations. The airline utilizes the Ink Departure Control System (Ink DCS) on both desktop and mobile platforms, alongside Ink Load Control, to optimize check-in, boarding, baggage handling, and aircraft weight and balance procedures. At LaGuardia, the mobile-enabled operations enable agents to conduct ID checks, issue boarding passes, and print IATA-compliant bag tags directly in passenger queues. The system also allows for rapid deployment of additional service points, handheld boarding with cabin-bag prompts, gate-tag printing, and integrated APIS and Timatic checks. Delivered via the cloud, this infrastructure minimizes reliance on fixed installations, enhancing operational resilience.
BermudAir’s LaGuardia service operates twice weekly, complementing its existing twice-weekly flights from Newark and ongoing operations at Westchester County Airport. This expanded network improves access between the New York metropolitan area and Bermuda, with tickets now available for purchase.
As Bermuda’s flagship carrier, BermudAir is committed to delivering a streamlined and efficient airport experience on its North American routes. However, the airline, along with its competitors, must continue to navigate the broader challenges posed by air traffic control disruptions and the operational pressures stemming from the government shutdown.
