BigBear.ai and Smiths Detection Collaborate to Advance Airport Security
BigBear.ai and Smiths Detection have announced a strategic integration of their cutting-edge security technologies aimed at enhancing safety measures in airports globally. This partnership combines BigBear.ai’s Pangiam Threat Detection platform with Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX computed tomography (CT) screening systems, creating a unified solution designed to improve the detection of prohibited items in luggage in real time. The integrated system is currently undergoing trials at several international airports and is positioned for broader deployment across aviation, port, and border control environments.
Enhancing Security Through Open Architecture and Interoperability
The collaboration underscores a shared commitment to developing smarter, open, and interoperable security solutions. Cymoril Metivier, Smiths Detection’s digital global director, highlighted the importance of this partnership in advancing the principles of the Ada initiative, which promotes open architecture in security systems. By combining Smiths Detection’s high-resolution CT imaging with BigBear.ai’s artificial intelligence analytics and algorithms, the integrated platform offers airport operators a flexible and adaptable tool to modernize checkpoint security.
BigBear.ai’s Pangiam platform, initially developed under the “Project Dartmouth” initiative, is designed to support integration with a variety of third-party scanning hardware and detection algorithms. This open architecture approach allows airports and federal agencies to tailor their security capabilities to evolving threats, enhancing responsiveness and operational efficiency. Kevin McAleenan, CEO of BigBear.ai, emphasized that the interoperability between their platform and Smiths Detection’s equipment accelerates threat detection while streamlining screening workflows, ultimately improving passenger throughput and experience.

Despite the promising advancements, integrating these sophisticated technologies presents challenges. Airports must navigate the complexities of merging new systems with existing infrastructure, ensuring seamless operation without disrupting current workflows. In a related development, Denver International Airport recently implemented BigBear.ai’s biometric verification system, veriScan, at 14 international departure gates in October 2024, further illustrating the company’s growing influence in airport security technology.
