BSSPL Implements Netradyne AI Safety System in Aviation Fueling Fleet
Bharat Stars Services Private Limited (BSSPL), a joint venture between Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and ST Airport Services Pte. Ltd (STARS), has announced the deployment of Netradyne’s AI-powered driver safety platform across its aviation fueling fleet operating at Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru airports. This strategic initiative is designed to enhance operational safety within some of India’s busiest and most complex airport environments.
Enhancing Safety Through Advanced AI Technology
The Netradyne Driver•i platform utilizes edge AI and computer vision to continuously monitor and analyze driver behavior in real time. It is engineered to detect critical safety risks such as driver fatigue, drowsiness, and distraction, issuing immediate in-cab alerts to enable drivers to take corrective action and prevent potential incidents. The system also provides collision warnings for vehicles operating in close proximity to aircraft, ground support equipment, and airport personnel on the tarmac—zones where safety is of utmost importance.
Beyond identifying unsafe driving practices, the platform incorporates Netradyne’s GreenZone safety scoring framework, which tracks and rewards positive driving behaviors. This feature allows fleet operators to benchmark driver performance and monitor safety trends, thereby fostering a culture of continuous improvement across operations.
JP Singh, Chief Executive Officer of BSSPL, emphasized the importance of this technology, stating, “Our ground operations teams work around the clock, 24/7, 365 days a year in some of the most demanding airport environments. While we have always maintained rigorous safety standards, the reality is that fatigue, distraction, and momentary lapses can occur even among the most experienced operators. The deployment of advanced AI technology is intended to further strengthen our operational safety.”
Strategic Implications and Operational Challenges
BSSPL, which provides in-plane fueling services, fuel farm management, and comprehensive aviation fuel solutions at major airports, views the adoption of AI as a critical step toward enhancing safety in airside fueling activities. These operations require vehicles to function under stringent conditions and in close proximity to active aircraft, where any lapse can have serious consequences.
However, the integration of Netradyne’s system presents several challenges. BSSPL must ensure seamless compatibility with existing operational frameworks, manage staff training and adaptation, and address potential resistance to new technology adoption. Successfully overcoming these obstacles will be essential to fully realize the benefits of the AI platform.
The market has responded favorably to BSSPL’s commitment to safety and operational efficiency. Industry analysts suggest that such investments may bolster investor confidence and could encourage competitors to adopt similar AI-driven safety technologies or intensify their own safety initiatives. This trend has the potential to elevate safety standards across the entire aviation fueling sector.
By incorporating advanced AI safety systems, BSSPL aims to reinforce its leadership in operational safety while adapting to the evolving demands of airport ground handling operations.
