Building a Career in Safety, Reliability, and Leadership
Stacy Morrissey, Vice President of Engineering and Quality at American Airlines, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Airlines for America (A4A) Nuts and Bolts Award. This prestigious accolade recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding service and achievements in engineering or maintenance within the commercial aviation sector. Morrissey is only the third woman to receive this honor in the award’s 60-year history, joining a distinguished group of American Airlines leaders such as Ken MacTiernan and Chief Operating Officer David Seymour.
The announcement was made during a surprise ceremony at the Robert L. Crandall Campus in Fort Worth, Texas. Morrissey expressed her gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the collective effort that underpins the aviation industry’s success. She remarked, “Aviation is an extraordinary industry, made possible by the passion, creativity, and relentless commitment to safety of the people in it. Every day we come together and make the impossible happen.”
A Distinguished Career in Aviation
Morrissey began her career at American Airlines in 1998 as a Fleet Operations Engineer, supporting the Boeing 757, 767, and 777 fleets. Over the years, she advanced through various leadership roles, including Director of Quality Assurance and Managing Director of Base and Strategic Planning. In July 2020, she was appointed Vice President of Engineering and Quality. In this capacity, she leads a team of more than 1,400 professionals responsible for engineering, quality control, reliability, and maintenance programs.
Her leadership arrives at a critical juncture for the aviation industry, which is confronting significant challenges related to safety, reliability, and organizational culture. The AIN 2026 Corporate Aviation Leadership Summit underscored the importance of adapting to generational shifts and evolving expectations within business aviation. Across the industry, there is a growing focus on reimagining safety culture and compliance, with competitors adopting innovative frameworks for risk management and enterprise-level safety, as reported by Aviation International News.
Kevin Brickner, American Airlines’ Senior Vice President of Technical Operations, commended Morrissey’s expertise in navigating complex technical issues and her ability to foster trust across operational teams. He noted her commitment to enhancing safety and customer experience, describing her as “a visible, engaged leader who prioritizes mentoring, talent development, and building strong technical teams that people want to be part of for the long term.” Morrissey is also recognized for her advocacy for women in aviation and engineering, using her platform to promote opportunity, allyship, and professional growth.
Leadership and Industry Impact
Organizational culture and employee engagement remain central to leadership strategies in the safety and reliability sectors. Human resources leaders anticipate continued evolution in 2026, with optimism about cultivating workplace environments where innovation and safety can flourish.
Morrissey’s influence extends beyond American Airlines. In 2024, she joined the Aviation Supply Chain Integrity Coalition, an initiative dedicated to preventing unauthorized parts from entering the aviation supply chain. This involvement underscores her commitment to enhancing safety and reliability across the entire industry.
When asked about the most rewarding aspect of her role, Morrissey emphasized the people she works with. “It’s the people. I love the way that people come together to run the operation and drive innovative solutions to run the safest and most reliable airline possible,” she said.
Morrissey’s career exemplifies the evolving demands of leadership in aviation, where safety, reliability, and a strong organizational culture are more critical than ever.
