China Delays Airbus Approvals Amid Pressure on Europe Over Domestic Jets

China Delays Airbus Approvals Amid Tensions Over Domestic Jet Certification
China has been postponing the approval of Airbus aircraft deliveries, reflecting growing frustration with European regulators over the protracted certification process for Chinese-made jets produced by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), according to sources cited by Bloomberg News. The Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) has withheld the final authorizations necessary for Airbus jets to enter service within the country for several months, a move widely interpreted as a response to delays by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) in certifying COMAC’s aircraft.
Impact on Airbus and the Global Aviation Industry
These regulatory delays have reverberated throughout the global aviation sector. Airbus has informed certain customers of further postponements in the delivery of its A350 aircraft, contributing to a 2.9% decline in the company’s share price. The disruptions have also affected airline operations, notably delaying Qantas’s much-anticipated nonstop flights to London and New York. The supply chain challenges underscore the broader consequences of regulatory friction between China and Europe in the aerospace industry.
Airbus is actively working to realign its production and delivery timelines, targeting a resolution of the current issues by the end of June. The company attributes the delays to administrative obstacles, which have impeded the transfer of nearly 20 aircraft to China, as well as a quality control problem affecting the production of the A320neo family.
Requests for comment from Airbus, EASA, CAAC, and COMAC were not immediately answered. Reuters was unable to independently verify the report.
