Civil Aviation Minister Announces Upcoming AAIB Report on Air India Phuket-Delhi Incident

Civil Aviation Minister Announces Imminent AAIB Report on Air India Phuket-Delhi Incident
Investigation Nearing Completion
New Delhi – Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu announced on Thursday that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is close to finalizing its investigation into the Air India flight incident that occurred on August 4, involving the Phuket-Delhi route. A preliminary report is expected shortly, which will provide detailed insights into the sudden altitude loss and the resulting injuries sustained by passengers and crew.
The incident involved Air India Flight AI 2379, carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members. While cruising at 36,000 feet, the aircraft experienced an abrupt descent of 300 feet, accompanied by turbulence lasting nearly five minutes. The minister confirmed that at least 17 individuals were injured, including 20 passengers and four crew members, with two crew members suffering spinal injuries near the tailbone and neck.
Scope of the Investigation and Safety Concerns
Minister Naidu highlighted that the AAIB is conducting a comprehensive examination of all relevant factors, including technical, operational, medical, and human elements. He stated, “Once the AAIB report is out, further course of action will then be decided.” The government has instructed the investigative body to expedite its findings, with the aim of enforcing stricter regulations and imposing stringent penalties to prevent similar incidents in the future.
A critical focus of the investigation is the flight captain, who tested positive for marijuana during post-flight screening in Delhi. A confirmatory test upheld this result, raising serious questions about Air India’s safety protocols and operational oversight. The minister also noted ongoing government engagement with airlines, emphasizing the need for improvements in both financial management and safety practices. “We have been pushing them to step up their operations, especially the financial side of it. The airlines have assured they will be doing it quite soon,” Naidu remarked.
Implications for Air India and the Aviation Sector
The forthcoming AAIB report is anticipated to provide a thorough account of the turbulence’s severity and its impact on those on board, while also addressing broader concerns related to Air India’s operational and safety management. The incident has intensified scrutiny of the airline’s procedures and raised broader questions about safety standards across the industry. Market reactions and responses from competitors are awaited as the sector closely monitors the investigation’s outcome.
The government’s prompt response and the ongoing inquiry underscore a renewed commitment to aviation safety, signaling an intent to prevent such incidents in the future through enhanced oversight and regulatory measures.
