Civil Aviation Ministry and SITA Delegation Review Airport Digital Transformation

Civil Aviation Ministry and SITA Delegation Review Airport Digital Transformation
Advancing Digital Infrastructure in Egyptian Aviation
Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh el-Hefny convened on Thursday with a delegation from SITA, a prominent global provider of information and communications technology for the air transport industry. The delegation was led by Selim Bouri, President for the Middle East, Africa, and Türkiye. This meeting is part of Egypt’s ongoing efforts to accelerate digital transformation and modernize technological infrastructure within the aviation sector. The Ministry’s strategy aims to align airport operations with the latest international standards, enhancing efficiency and passenger experience.
Discussions centered on the development of operational systems and the rapid adoption of advanced digital solutions at Egyptian airports. The SITA delegation highlighted global trends shaping the future of travel and airport technology, focusing on the transition toward smart operations driven by digital integration and artificial intelligence. These innovations are intended to improve airport management and streamline passenger processing.
Exploring Cutting-Edge Technologies and Industry Challenges
The meeting examined a variety of advanced solutions, including smart operational systems, real-time data exchange, biometric identification, contactless travel processes, AI applications, predictive analytics, and Airport Integrated Management (TAM) systems. Both parties also addressed the growing international movement toward unified operational platforms that connect airports, airlines, and other stakeholders through integrated digital systems. Such platforms facilitate faster decision-making and enhance operational efficiency.
Despite significant investments in technology—highlighted by SITA’s 2025 Air Transport IT Insights report, which noted a record $50.8 billion spent in 2025—the industry continues to face challenges in achieving seamless data coordination among systems and partners. This issue is particularly pronounced in critical areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, digital identities, and sustainability, where effective data integration is vital for operational success. Recent declines in airport traffic at regional hubs like Entebbe, influenced by disruptions in the Middle East, further emphasize the necessity for resilient and integrated digital systems. These market fluctuations underscore the importance of data-driven decision-making and enhanced integration of flight operations to maintain efficiency and competitiveness.
Commitment to Collaboration and Future Prospects
Minister el-Hefny reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication to advancing its digital transformation program and upgrading operational systems across Egyptian airports. He emphasized that partnerships with specialized international companies like SITA are fundamental to the Ministry’s strategy, ensuring Egypt remains aligned with rapid global technological advancements and strengthens operational sustainability.
Selim Bouri, President of SITA for the Middle East, Africa, and Türkiye, commended the progress made by Egypt’s civil aviation sector and the initiatives undertaken to enhance airport operational and digital infrastructure. He reiterated SITA’s commitment to supporting the Ministry’s digital transformation efforts, noting that Egypt is well-positioned to emerge as a regional leader in smart airport operations in the coming years.
