ENAIRE Joins VERTI-GO Advanced Air Mobility Integration Project
Spain’s air navigation service provider, ENAIRE, has officially become a partner in the European VERTI-GO (Vertical Operations Ready to GO) project, a significant initiative focused on integrating advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft—such as electric air taxis and cargo drones—into European airspace. This collaboration represents a crucial advancement within the three-year SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking, which aims to develop and validate the necessary procedures, services, and technologies to ensure the safe coexistence of emerging aerial vehicles alongside conventional aircraft.
Collaborative Effort to Address Airspace Complexity
Led by Honeywell Aerospace, the €5 million VERTI-GO project unites 12 European partners, including prominent organizations such as NATS, EUROCONTROL, Aena, Frequentis, Vertical Aerospace, and ODYS Aviation. Together, the consortium will tackle the operational and technological challenges posed by increasingly complex airspace environments, driven by the growing adoption of urban air mobility solutions.
ENAIRE’s role will leverage its extensive expertise in air traffic management, U-space initiatives, and drone traffic coordination. The organisation will focus on developing and validating operational concepts that facilitate the safe integration of crewed aircraft, electric vertical take-off and landing vehicles (eVTOLs), cargo drones, and traditional air traffic. Key areas of research include digital flight planning, process automation, vertiport management, and enhanced coordination between AAM operators and air traffic controllers.
Demonstrations and Future Challenges
A highlight of ENAIRE’s involvement will be its leadership in electric air taxi demonstrations scheduled for 2028 in southern Spain. These trials, planned along prospective advanced air mobility corridors between Málaga and Marbella, will evaluate air traffic management procedures, digital services, and operational frameworks essential for the deployment of AAM services.
Despite the promising outlook, ENAIRE faces significant challenges. The expected surge in air taxi traffic demands the development of advanced, automated air traffic control systems capable of managing high volumes while maintaining safety standards. Furthermore, while the market remains optimistic about urban air mobility’s growth potential, concerns persist regarding the high costs of implementing these technologies and the reliability and security of shared data. Competitors may respond by initiating similar projects or enhancing their data security measures to address these issues.
The VERTI-GO project is set to run from June 2026 through May 2029, featuring simulations and operational demonstrations across Europe. The results are anticipated to shape the regulatory and operational frameworks necessary for the future integration of advanced aerial vehicles into European airspace.
