Gujarat CM Inaugurates Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit in GIFT City
GANDHINAGAR, Gujarat – Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel inaugurated the India Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit 2.0 at GIFT City on Wednesday, highlighting the city’s rising prominence as a pivotal hub for aviation finance. The event was jointly organized by the Ministry of Civil Aviation, the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI). It convened Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu alongside industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders from both India and abroad.
Strengthening Aviation Finance Ecosystem
During the summit, several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed among key players including Air India, IndiGo, Star Air, Bank of India, IFSCA, and Akasa Air. These agreements are expected to foster new partnerships and investments within the civil aviation sector. Additionally, FICCI unveiled a comprehensive knowledge report outlining the sector’s future prospects.
Chief Minister Patel emphasized GIFT City’s evolution into India’s fintech hub, attributing its development to the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He underscored the summit’s objective to enhance the aviation financing ecosystem by expanding IFSCA’s role in aircraft leasing and financing, while integrating global best practices at the local level. Patel noted that the unified regulatory framework established by IFSCA has significantly improved the ease of doing business for the aircraft leasing industry. He also highlighted recent tax holidays and incentives announced in the Union Budget, which are anticipated to boost GIFT City’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Expressing confidence in Gujarat’s potential to lead the aviation and aircraft leasing sectors, Patel revealed that over 370 assets have already been leased through IFSCA in GIFT City. He called upon industry leaders to collaborate closely with IFSCA to help realize the Prime Minister’s vision of a developed India by 2047.
GIFT City’s Strategic Role in Global Aviation Finance
Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu described GIFT City as the “brainchild” of Prime Minister Modi and India’s gateway to global financial markets. Drawing comparisons with established international financial hubs such as Dublin, Singapore, and Dubai, Naidu noted that a robust ecosystem for aircraft leasing and financing has been successfully established in GIFT City. He projected that India’s aviation sector could witness aircraft leasing opportunities worth nearly $50 billion over the next decade, positioning the country not only as a major consumer but also as a key architect of global finance. Naidu further stated that India is on course to become the world’s third-largest civil aviation market by 2035.
The summit takes place amid ongoing global aviation challenges, including supply chain disruptions and geopolitical uncertainties, particularly those arising from conflicts in the Middle East. Despite these headwinds, interest in India’s aviation sector remains strong, supported by the government’s $3.1 billion investment in the UDAN regional connectivity scheme. This initiative aims to develop 100 airports and 200 helipads over the next decade, fostering regional aviation growth. The increased focus on regional connectivity is expected to stimulate competitive responses from other regions seeking to enhance their aviation infrastructure and financing capabilities.
With GIFT City’s expanding role and sustained government support, India is strategically positioning itself as a significant player in the global aviation finance landscape, even as it navigates complex international challenges.
