Honeywell to Expand Aircraft Engine Manufacturing in Arizona for New Navy Jet Trainer
Expansion of F124 Engine Production in Phoenix
Honeywell (NASDAQ: HON) has announced a significant expansion of its F124 jet engine manufacturing at its Phoenix Engines campus to support the U.S. Navy’s forthcoming Undergraduate Jet Training System (UJTS) program. The company will introduce on-site assembly of the F124-GA-200 engines, which are slated to power the Beechcraft M-346N, a leading contender to replace the Navy’s aging T-45 Goshawk training jets. The Navy is expected to award the UJTS contract in 2027, with plans to acquire more than 200 new aircraft and simulators.
By relocating F124 engine assembly to Phoenix, Honeywell aims to consolidate production alongside its existing engineering and design operations, thereby enhancing program support and operational efficiency. Dave Marinick, president of Engines & Power Systems at Honeywell Aerospace, emphasized the company’s longstanding presence in Phoenix, noting that the campus has produced tens of thousands of engines and auxiliary power units over more than 75 years. He expressed pride in beginning F124 engine assembly locally to support the Navy’s new jet trainer initiative.
Strategic Investment and Industry Context
The expansion is underpinned by a $500 million investment intended to boost production capacity. This move has been well received by investors and is expected to reinforce Honeywell’s standing in the military aviation sector. Nevertheless, the company faces challenges, including the need for substantial infrastructure upgrades at the Phoenix facility and extensive workforce training to meet the technical demands of advanced engine assembly.
Competition for the Navy’s UJTS contract is anticipated to be intense, with major aerospace firms such as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Sierra Nevada Corporation also vying for the opportunity to replace the T-45 fleet. Honeywell’s investment in Arizona positions it as a formidable contender, though the final outcome will depend on the Navy’s selection and Honeywell’s capacity to scale production effectively.
Significance of the UJTS Program
The UJTS program represents a major modernization effort for the Navy’s pilot training system, integrating new aircraft with sophisticated simulators to better prepare aviators for future operational demands. Honeywell’s expanded manufacturing presence in Arizona highlights its commitment to supporting this transition and sustaining its leadership in aerospace propulsion technology.
