Hypersonic Aircraft Startup Integrates Autonomy Software for 2027 Test Flight

Hypersonic Aircraft Startup to Integrate Autonomy Software for 2027 Test Flight
Anduril Industries and Hermeus have announced a strategic partnership to integrate Anduril’s Lattice autonomy software into Hermeus’ hypersonic demonstrator aircraft, the Quarterhorse Mk 2. The collaboration aims to conduct a test flight in 2027, combining two advanced technologies that have garnered substantial interest and investment from the U.S. Air Force. This initiative seeks to push the boundaries of high-speed, autonomous flight, potentially transforming future combat aviation.
Advancing Hypersonic Flight with Autonomy
Hermeus is developing a reusable aircraft designed to reach hypersonic speeds, defined as Mach 5 and above, with backing from the U.S. Air Force. Although the Quarterhorse has yet to achieve hypersonic velocity, the company is currently targeting supersonic speeds (Mach 1+) as an intermediate milestone in its testing program. The integration of Anduril’s autonomy software is expected to provide rapid and precise control as the aircraft approaches speeds of approximately one mile per second. This capability is critical for enabling future collaborative combat aircraft operations, where autonomous systems must operate reliably at extreme velocities.
The integration of advanced autonomy into a hypersonic platform presents significant technical challenges, particularly in ensuring the software’s reliability and safety under extreme conditions. Brett Darcey, vice president for mission autonomy at Anduril, outlined a rigorous testing process that will span the remainder of the year. This process includes software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, and validation testing before progressing to flight trials. Such a methodical approach is intended to build confidence in the software’s ability to manage flight dynamics and mission-critical functions autonomously.
Autonomy Software and the Future of Collaborative Combat Aircraft
Anduril’s Lattice autonomy system is currently being refined for the U.S. Air Force’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft (CCA) program, where it competes alongside Shield AI and Collins Aerospace. While this experience provides a foundation, the demands of hypersonic flight require further innovation. The Autonomy Government Reference Architecture, which guides most contractors’ autonomy software development, mandates that the Quarterhorse be capable of fully autonomous flight across all regimes, including the transition to supersonic speeds.
Darcey explained that human operators will set velocity commands, but the software will autonomously execute these commands. This necessitates extensive software and hardware-in-the-loop testing, as well as independent validation of route generation and execution at high speeds. Building trust between human operators and autonomous systems remains an evolving challenge, with tactics and procedures still under development.
Industry Response and Competitive Implications
The announcement has elicited skepticism from some quarters regarding the feasibility of combining hypersonic speeds with advanced autonomy, given the considerable technical hurdles involved. Nonetheless, the partnership is likely to spur competitors to accelerate their own efforts in autonomy and hypersonic technology, intensifying the race to demonstrate operational capabilities in this emerging domain.
By integrating Anduril’s Lattice software with Hermeus’ Quarterhorse, the collaboration aims to demonstrate the potential of autonomous, high-speed collaborative combat aircraft. This effort represents a significant advancement in both hypersonic propulsion and autonomous flight systems, with implications for the future of military aviation.

How he has helped me in curing my sickness and bringing happiness into my life. I can really vouch for DR AGBOMIAN SUNDAY, In herbal treatment. I was suffering from Cervical Cancer and infected with HPV. I used to have unusual vaginal bleeding and painful urination. There was nothing I could do until a childhood friend introduced me to Dr. Agbomian Sunday Herbal Remedies. I spoke with him and ordered his recommended medication which was delivered to me through DHL. Immediately I began using herbal medicine, and within a week I couldn't feel any pain. It took me 2 weeks to finish the medicine and afterwards I was completely cured. I highly recommend that you order your herbal medication through. Dragbomianherbalcured77@gmail.com
