MRO Industry Update — May 24, 2026
MTU Maintenance Expands PW800 Capabilities
MTU Maintenance Berlin-Brandenburg has achieved a significant milestone with the redelivery of its first repaired Pratt & Whitney Canada PW800 engine, following a major expansion of its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capabilities at the Ludwigsfelde facility. This advancement comes amid ongoing supply chain disruptions and geopolitical tensions that continue to challenge the MRO sector, as highlighted during the 2026 MRO Americas event.
Having secured EASA certification in 2025, MTU is now one of only two facilities worldwide authorized to provide full MRO services for the PW800 engine. The Ludwigsfelde site, which initially specialized in low-pressure turbine work, has industrialized comprehensive maintenance and testing processes to support extended multimodule maintenance as an approved OEMRO partner. This expansion strengthens MTU’s business jet portfolio and deepens its longstanding collaboration with Pratt & Whitney Canada, which operates the only other PW800 MRO facility in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The PW800 engine powers advanced business jets such as the Gulfstream G500, G600, Dassault Falcon 6X, and the forthcoming Gulfstream G400. As of May 2026, over 1,000 PW800 engines have been produced, powering more than 415 business jets across 30 countries.
European MRO Developments and Market Responses
In Europe, Liebherr-Aerospace has secured a contract with Finnair to overhaul the nose landing gear systems for the airline’s Airbus A350 fleet. All overhaul activities will be conducted at Liebherr’s Lindenberg facility in Germany, leveraging its expertise as both an original equipment manufacturer and a specialized MRO center for landing gear systems. Alex Vlielander, Chief Customer Officer at Liebherr-Aerospace & Transportation SAS, noted that the industry is entering a decisive planning phase for the next global landing gear overhaul wave, emphasizing the importance of anticipating and securing future maintenance slots. This agreement further solidifies Liebherr’s role as a key support partner for Finnair’s A350 operations.
Meanwhile, APOC Aviation is responding to evolving market demands by launching a new exchange program focused on high-quality, in-demand components. The company is expanding its inventory with used serviceable material sourced from recent A320 Family teardowns at its facility near Schiphol airport. Craig Skilton, Vice President of Components at APOC Aviation, described building an exchange pool of narrowbody assets as a cornerstone of the company’s strategic approach.
Industry Challenges and Strategic Shifts
These developments occur as the MRO industry faces increased scrutiny regarding network reliability and maintenance requirements, particularly with the CFM Leap engine approaching its tenth anniversary. Regional competitors are intensifying efforts to capture market share; Malaysia, for instance, is revitalizing its MRO infrastructure and developing new aeroparks aimed at securing 20% to 25% of Asia-Pacific market growth. Additionally, broader industry shifts, such as the Publicis-LiveRamp deal, are expected to reshape the data landscape, prompting rival agencies to reassess their data partnerships and strategies.
Despite persistent challenges, the MRO sector continues to adapt, innovate, and expand, reaffirming its essential role in supporting global aviation.
