NCC Supports UK Aerospace Innovation with Landmark Vertical Aerospace Flight
Vertical Aerospace has successfully completed the United Kingdom’s first public demonstration flight of a full-scale wing tilt-rotor electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow. This milestone represents a significant advancement for British aerospace and the emerging sector of advanced air mobility. The flight showcased the Valo eVTOL aircraft, which features propulsion blades developed in partnership with the National Composites Centre (NCC), highlighting the UK’s expanding role in the global race to develop next-generation electric aircraft.
Collaborative Engineering and Innovation
The NCC worked closely with Vertical Aerospace’s engineering team to design and industrialize the Gen 2 composite rotor blades and key fuselage components for the full-scale prototype. These rotor blades, essential for the aircraft’s vertical lift and transition to wingborne flight, demanded a fundamentally new design approach to ensure they remained lightweight, aerodynamically efficient, and compliant with rigorous certification standards, including bird strike resistance. Leveraging over 15 years of aerospace expertise, NCC engineers developed an innovative blade architecture that integrates structural performance directly into the design, setting a new benchmark for eVTOL propulsion systems.
This collaboration underscores NCC’s ability to drive innovation across the aerospace sector, supporting both established global manufacturers and ambitious start-ups. By assisting Vertical Aerospace in identifying UK-based manufacturing partners capable of producing components at scale, NCC has played a pivotal role in strengthening the domestic supply chain. Currently, approximately 60% of Vertical’s procurement expenditure remains within the UK, with around 30% invested in the South West region, reinforcing Bristol and the West of England as the UK’s premier aerospace cluster.
Industry Context and Future Prospects
Vertical Aerospace’s progress is bolstered by substantial government support, including a recent £10 million investment that brings total public funding to £48 million. This financial backing reflects the UK government’s commitment to pioneering zero-emission urban transport solutions. Vertical’s electric flying taxi aims to transform urban mobility, although it faces intense competition from US-based Joby Aviation, which has already conducted public eVTOL tests in New York. While Vertical is focused on its all-electric model, it is also developing a hybrid system and is engaged in advanced negotiations to establish its first full-scale production facilities in the UK.
Despite these advancements, Vertical Aerospace must still secure type certification for its aircraft, anticipated by 2029. The competitive landscape remains dynamic, with both Vertical and Joby striving to commercialize eVTOL technology and shape the future of advanced air mobility.
