BETA Technologies has initiated test flights of its ALIA CX300 all-electric aircraft from Scholes International Airport in Galveston, marking a pivotal advancement in the adoption of advanced air mobility solutions within Texas. The Vermont-based company’s experimental fixed-wing aircraft, designed to carry up to five passengers at speeds reaching 153 knots (approximately 176 mph), will conduct flights over the next three weeks connecting Galveston, Sugar Land, and Brenham.
Aircraft Capabilities and Operational Scope
The ALIA CX300 features conventional takeoff and landing capabilities and can be fully recharged in under an hour. It boasts a range of 336 nautical miles (around 386 miles), a 50-foot wingspan, and a cargo capacity of 200 cubic feet. Powered by BETA’s proprietary H500A engine, which delivers up to 572 horsepower, the aircraft is currently undergoing passenger-free test flights aimed at evaluating performance and optimizing routes between key Texas population centers.
Potential applications for the ALIA CX300 extend beyond regional passenger transport to include emergency medical response and offshore logistics for the Gulf Coast energy industry. The project’s ultimate vision involves establishing a network of “air taxis” linking major Texas cities such as Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio.
Regulatory Framework and Industry Context
This initiative forms part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) three-year Advanced Air Mobility and Electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) Integration Pilot Program. Texas was selected as one of eight states to participate in the program’s initial phase, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). Sergio Roman, TxDOT’s director of emerging aviation technology, emphasized the significance of the effort, stating that it represents a groundbreaking approach to safely integrating electric aircraft into U.S. airspace and positions Texas at the forefront of next-generation aviation, enhancing safety and connectivity statewide.
Despite the promising outlook, the introduction of advanced electric aircraft faces considerable challenges. Regulatory authorities continue to scrutinize safety protocols, airspace integration, and environmental impacts. Concerns regarding noise pollution and the sustainability of energy sources remain central as the electric aviation sector expands.
The market response has been robust, with growing interest in advanced air mobility solutions. Industry players such as Joby Aviation are accelerating production of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, while competitors including Pipistrel and Embraer are advancing their own models, such as the Voyager and KC-390 Millennium Airlifter, respectively.
BETA Technologies has secured over 5,000 square feet of leased space from the City of Galveston at Scholes International Airport, which now hosts the first aircraft charging station west of the Mississippi River. This facility also supports electric vehicles, underscoring the region’s commitment to sustainable transportation infrastructure. As testing progresses, industry observers remain attentive to the potential impact of these technologies on regional transit and the broader aviation industry.
