Qatar Airways and Google Collaborate on AI-Generated Commercials Aboard In-Flight Studio
Pioneering AI-Driven Advertising at 35,000 Feet
Qatar Airways has embarked on a groundbreaking venture in aviation and advertising with the launch of the Sky Studio Challenge, an innovative initiative that produced AI-generated commercials entirely during a flight. In partnership with Google and leveraging Starlink’s high-speed satellite connectivity, the project took place aboard a Qatar Airways Airbus A350 on a 15-hour journey from Doha to Atlanta on November 17, 2025. This unprecedented experiment demonstrated the transformative potential of reliable inflight internet to facilitate sophisticated media production at cruising altitude.
Throughout the ultra-long-haul flight, two commercials were conceptualized, created, and published onboard using Google’s advanced Gemini AI models for video and image generation. The seamless gate-to-gate connectivity provided by Starlink enabled real-time cloud processing, rapid transfer of large files, and continuous collaboration with ground-based teams. These capabilities matched or exceeded typical home broadband speeds, underscoring the technological leap in inflight connectivity.
Creative Expertise and Technological Leadership
The project enlisted the talents of acclaimed AI filmmakers PJ Accetturo, noted for his viral NBA Finals campaign, and Torey Kohara, who is recognized for his ability to translate complex technical ideas into emotionally compelling narratives for major brands. Their involvement highlighted the creative possibilities unlocked when cutting-edge AI tools are combined with dependable inflight internet, pushing the boundaries of traditional advertising production.
This initiative aligns with Qatar Airways’ ongoing commitment to technological innovation. Recently honored as the World’s Best Airline by Skytrax for the ninth time in 2025, the carrier now operates over 100 widebody aircraft equipped with Starlink, with more than half its fleet offering the fastest inflight Wi-Fi available. This extensive deployment establishes Qatar Airways as the operator of the world’s largest fleet of Starlink-enabled widebody jets, connecting destinations across six continents.
Babar Rahman, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Qatar Airways, emphasized the significance of the project: “This first-of-its-kind challenge demonstrates why Qatar Airways is leading the industry in inflight connectivity, which our passengers can experience today rather than months or years from now. As the first airline to offer Starlink in the MENA region, we are already setting new benchmarks and delivering industry-first achievements at an unprecedented pace.”
Challenges and Industry Perspectives on AI-Generated Advertising
Despite the promise of AI-driven advertising, the approach faces notable challenges. Recent consumer reactions, such as the backlash against Coca-Cola’s AI-generated ads, reveal skepticism toward the authenticity and emotional resonance of AI-produced content. While some audiences remain indifferent, others view AI advertising as a cost-cutting tactic that may erode brand integrity. Industry competitors may either adopt similar AI strategies or critique the trend as impersonal and lacking creative depth. Concerns also persist regarding whether generative AI can consistently deliver the distinctiveness and quality traditionally associated with human-crafted campaigns.
Nonetheless, the Sky Studio Challenge offers a compelling glimpse into the future of inflight media production and global connectivity. It illustrates both the opportunities and complexities involved in integrating advanced AI technologies into the evolving advertising landscape.
