RAK Ruler Witnesses Signing of Agreement to Launch Ras Al Khaimah Air Taxi Service by 2027
Strategic Partnership to Pioneer Air Taxi Service
RAS AL KHAIMAH – His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, presided over the signing of a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the emirate’s first air taxi service, scheduled for launch by 2027. The agreement was formalized at Sheikh Saud’s palace in Saqr bin Mohamed City, uniting the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), US-based Joby Aviation, and UK-based Skyports Infrastructure in a strategic collaboration.
The ceremony was attended by key figures including JoeBen Bevirt, CEO and founder of Joby Aviation; Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports; and Eng. Esmaeel Hassan Alblooshi, Director-General of RAKTA and Acting Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation, alongside senior officials. Sheikh Saud highlighted the initiative’s alignment with the UAE’s broader vision for innovative and sustainable mobility, emphasizing its potential to enhance quality of life and bolster Ras Al Khaimah’s position as a global hub for living, tourism, and investment. “This partnership represents a transformative leap, bridging our ambitious present with a bright future and turning aspirations into achievements for generations to come,” he remarked.
Advancing Sustainable Urban Mobility
The collaboration will combine RAKTA’s local regulatory and operational support, Skyports’ expertise in vertiport infrastructure, and Joby Aviation’s cutting-edge all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft technology. Together, they will design, develop, and operate the air taxi service as a core element of Ras Al Khaimah’s 2030 Mobility Master Plan. This initiative aims to meet the increasing demand for rapid, convenient transportation within the emirate and across the UAE.
The envisioned air taxi network will not only serve Ras Al Khaimah but also create an inter-emirate corridor linking Joby’s anticipated Dubai service with key hospitality destinations in the emirate. This development promises to significantly reduce travel times; for instance, the journey from Dubai International Airport to Al Marjan Island, which currently exceeds one hour by car, could be completed in under 15 minutes by air taxi, traveling at speeds up to 321 kilometers per hour (200 miles per hour).
Joby’s aircraft is designed to carry a pilot and up to four passengers, operating with minimal noise and zero emissions. The service aims to deliver faster, quieter, and more convenient regional mobility options for short commutes and quick trips, reflecting a commitment to sustainable urban transport solutions.
Challenges and Market Implications
Despite its promise, the project faces several challenges, including regulatory compliance, infrastructure development, and the establishment of rigorous safety standards. The introduction of air taxi services is anticipated to stimulate increased market interest and may impact stock market activity for companies such as Joby Aviation and Blade Air Mobility. This competitive environment could prompt rivals to accelerate their development timelines or seek new strategic partnerships to maintain market relevance.
As Ras Al Khaimah advances this pioneering initiative, the emirate is positioning itself at the forefront of next-generation urban mobility, setting a regional benchmark for sustainable and innovative transportation solutions.
