Sydney-based startup Mako has secured $28 million in Series A funding to advance its innovative technology designed to enhance aviation efficiency and sustainability. Founded by former law student Henry Bilinsky, Mako draws inspiration from the mako shark’s skin, employing biomimicry to tackle the pressing challenges of rising fuel costs and carbon emissions in the aviation industry. The company’s flagship product, Flightfilm, is an adhesive film embedded with microscopic riblets that replicate the shark skin’s texture, reducing drag and improving aircraft performance.
Bilinsky explained that these riblets are microscopic grooves that elevate turbulent air, thereby reducing friction drag and increasing aircraft efficiency by up to 4 percent. Developed and manufactured in Australia, Flightfilm can be retrofitted onto existing aircraft, providing immediate improvements while longer-term solutions such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel and hydrogen engines continue to evolve.
Industry Partnerships and Strategic Growth
Mako has already garnered significant attention within the aviation sector, securing partnerships with major players including Delta Air Lines and the US Air Force. The recent funding round was led by Virescent Ventures, Australia’s largest clean energy fund, alongside Grok Ventures, Skip Capital, and IAG, the parent company of British Airways. The capital injection will facilitate further testing on an Airbus A320, support broader industry deployment, and enable expansion of the company’s team.
A key competitive advantage for Mako lies in its vertically integrated approach and proprietary manufacturing process. Bilinsky highlighted that their method of growing riblets using light allows for the creation of higher-resolution, better-performing designs, enabling rapid iteration at lower costs. This capability allows Mako to customize solutions for specific aircraft and operators, ensuring quick installation that aligns with existing maintenance schedules.
Challenges and Market Outlook
While the market response has been positive, with strong interest from both commercial airlines and defense sectors, Mako faces several challenges as it scales. These include expanding manufacturing capacity to meet growing demand, navigating complex regulatory environments across different aviation markets, and maintaining technological leadership amid increasing competition. Rivals may develop similar biomimetic technologies or form partnerships with aircraft manufacturers to enhance fuel efficiency.
The urgency for such innovations is underscored by volatile jet fuel prices and intensifying pressure on airlines to reduce emissions. However, the broader green aviation sector remains fraught with risk, as exemplified by the recent bankruptcy of Maeve Aerospace, highlighting the high stakes and lengthy development timelines associated with cleaner aviation technologies.
Despite these obstacles, investor confidence remains strong. Blair Pritchard, partner at Virescent Ventures, remarked, “Like its namesake, Mako is fast moving and ready to scale.” With its novel approach and robust industry support, Mako is positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to make aviation both faster and more environmentally sustainable.
